When Your Life Gets Chaotic, Organize It

Life loves to throw us curveballs. It loves to push us out of our comfort zone and make us feel that we should always be on our toes, waiting for the next hit. It doesn’t care if you are prepared for it or when your downtime is. It doesn’t even seem to bother to check your daily planner and make sure that you have nothing going on. There is nothing like life throwing you a curve ball to make you feel like you aren’t in control of your own life, but that is when you have to step in and take that control back. When life gets messy and feels like everything is out of control, take a moment to organize.

Sounds easy to just say “organize,” but it is really unbelievable how easy it is to make your mind feel at ease when you are able to control one part of your life when another part isn’t able to be controlled. An example of this would be my closet. This weekend I was feeling extremely down about my living situation and felt as though it was never something I was going to be able to get a hold on. I have been saving for years, but it was as if life was always getting in the way and pushing that money right back out the door. So instead of crying or losing sleep over it, I found something that I could control, my closet.

I know that might sound silly, but I have found that when I find a project it really calms my anxiety about something that I can’t change in life. I have been wanting to clean out my closet for weeks, so when I finally decided to do it, it was as if I was taking control again. When I got into that closet and started to reorganize and rearrange everything in its rightful place, it was as if the weight of the world was being taken off my shoulders and I was able to feel better about life. Organizing my closet wasn’t going to take away the problem, but it most certainly did take away the anxiety from it.

My anxiety, as I’m sure is the same as most others, makes me sometimes feel as though I’m not able to accomplish enough in my life as fast as I want to, but by organizing something, I’m able to get myself back on track and feel as though I’m behind the wheel again of my own life. I’m able to refocus my energy on doing something good for myself rather than focusing on this dark cloud that has been hanging over my head.

If you find yourself in a similar situation, where a part of your life is spinning out of control and you aren’t sure how to get it back on track, organize something. Find something that you can control and allow yourself to become fixated on fixing the things that you can change for the moment. While it might not help with your long term goals, it will give you the peace of mind that you need to keep moving forward.
