You Can’t Always Be There But You Can Stay Connected: 6 Ways To Show Your Love Despite The Distance

Being in a long-distance relationship can be the worst. Your loved one (whether that’s your soul mate, soul sister, or anyone else) won’t be by your side for all the good times and the bad. Fortunately, there are some things you can do to show and feel the love — it will be as if they’re right there by your side.

Whether you want to stay connected to your loved one in jail or send your love to your long-distance lover, we’ve put together a few suggestions for you:

#1 Always Say “Yes” to a Catch-Up Session

Let’s say you have a loved one in prison. It would be an understatement to say that it’s difficult to maintain communication with them. You can’t call them whenever you want (and the other way around), so treasure every call — even the ones that come at inconvenient times.

Calls aren’t free in prison, so you should appreciate that they spent their coin on you. With that said, you should always answer their call and catch them up on what’s going on in the outside world. Who knows? They might’ve called you because they needed to feel comforted by your voice.

#2 Have a Virtual Movie Night

One of the best things about the 21st century is that you can “go to the movies” with people who aren’t even in the same place as you.  As long as you’re subscribed to a streaming service, you and your friends can have a virtual movie night from the comfort of your own homes.

Agree on what to watch — classic rom-coms for a girls’ night in or a date night, maybe? Tell everyone to start the movie at the same time, or if you have Netflix, one way to watch together is through Netflix Party. You can also FaceTime with your friends so you can see each other’s reactions to swoon-worthy scenes.

#3 Video Chat Wherever, Whenever

You can’t be by their side, but wouldn’t it be great to feel as if you were? Fortunately, you can start a video chat at any time, and any place. You don’t even need to be dressed up to have a video call — even if you’re in your sweatpants, your loved ones will want to see you.

Going to the gym? Your loved one can tag along through video chat — they can even work out while you do.  Buying furniture? By video-chatting with your loved ones, they’ll feel as if they’re right there with you. It’s where they would be if they weren’t so far away.

Be sure to wear headphones, though! You wouldn’t want other people overhearing what your loved one is saying. (And believe us, things can get a bit lovey-dovey at times).

#4 Send Letters Through the Post

There’s nothing wrong with texting, but good old letters are more exciting. They give you something to look forward to every week. You’ll find yourself waiting by the window, counting the days the postman delivers your loved one’s letters. It’s very romantic, which is why this tip is perfect for long-distance lovers.

Plus, there’s something about being able to touch a person’s writing that is so special. That’s something that you could never do virtually. You can even spray the paper with your perfume so they will feel as if you’re right there.

#5 Do Something at the Same Time

The advantage of long-distance love is that it allows you to get extra creative with the ways you connect. Over time, the distance won’t be so bad, and you will both be able to see the fun in it. You’ll be excited to plan long-distance dinner dates, night ins, night outs, and more.

The key is to do the same things at the same time. For example, you could read the same book at the same time — like a mini book club for the two of you! You could also agree to grow a plant at the same time. That way, whenever you water the plant, you’ll feel connected to each other.

Eventually, the things that you do will grow to have meaning that reminds you of your loved one.

#6 Plan for the Future

Find comfort in the fact that you won’t be apart for life. You and your loved one will be by each other’s side eventually. To ease the pain of being apart, talk about the things you want to do when you’re together. Do you want to go on a romantic getaway? Do you want to window-shop for furniture for the house you’re going to buy together?

You could even do something that seems so ordinary but is everything to you since you never got the chance to do it together, such as going to the grocery store.

No one wants to have to live away from their loved ones.  However, if you’ve found yourself in that situation, know that you can still feel closer to them despite the distance. As you count the days you’ll be together again, practice the tips above to show your love.

  1. Maintaining a long-distance relationship is much more difficult than an usual relationship. This is important not only for your partner, but also for you. Remember that the initiative should not only be yours, but also your partner’s, motivate him to do so, tell him what is important for you. The longer a long-distance relationship lasts, the more likely it is that someone will appear and emotionally take the place near you or near your partner.
