According to theknot.com, the average price of a wedding in 2020 was $19,000 (which was down from $28,000 in 2019). There are so many things that you can buy for the same price as a wedding that last longer than one night, involve way less stress, and don’t involve kissing someone in front of your parents. Here are some things you can buy for the price of a wedding, broken down by wedding budget:

Wedding Budget: $10,000-$30,000

  1. One year of food for a family of four
  2. A 36 mm, steel and yellow gold Rolex Datejust
  3. A Nissan Versa
  4. One year’s rent
  5. A year of college at an in-state university
  6. A down payment on a house
  7. A boat
  8. A chunk of land on a private island
  9. A 57-day cruise to Antarctica, Amazon, and the Caribbean
  10. Professional artwork for your home

  2. A Chevy C8 Corvette
  3. A 140-day cruise around the world
  4. 10 shares of Amazon stock
  5. A three-carat diamond
  6. An initiation fee at the Singapore Island Country Club
  7. World Cup tickets
  8. One night in the Ty Warner Penthouse at the Four Seasons in New York
  9. Dessert for two at the Fortress Resort and Spa in Sri Lanka

Wedding Budget: $60,000-$100,000

  1. The entire country of Lichtenstein for one night
  2. A house in Detroit, Michigan
  3. A private jet flight from New York to Italy
  4. A James Bond-themed scotch encased in an Aston Martin DB5 engine piston
  5. A Cadillac Escalade
  6. One night in the Empathy Suite at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas
  7. A one-week yacht charter in the Mediterranean
  8. A private chef for one year
  9. A year of tuition at a private university

I’ve enjoyed all the weddings I’ve attended, but if watching Four Weddings has taught me anything, it’s that no matter how much money you spend, people will always be talking about what you could have done differently on your wedding day. If you want to get married but want to save your money for things that you’ll enjoy more, go for it – there’s nothing wrong with a courthouse wedding!
