Why Everyone Is So Obsessed With TikTok Right Now

You’ve definitely heard of TikTok taking the country and generation by storm, whether you use it or not. You may hate it or love it, but there’s no doubt that it’s incredibly popular right now.

So what makes TikTok so addictive?

TikTok has generated a massive user base. Even if you installed it to fill a void of missing the old Vine days, you’re probably now addicted to it. The app is filled with short videos, lasting between 15 to 60 seconds, of trendy dances, comedy skits, memes, and even DIY videos.

Unlike most social media, TikTok encourages the goofiness seen in the videos. This gives us a break from the more serious Facebook feed. The app gives most Gen Zs the opportunity to gain a little fame, too, since it enables anyone to be a creator. Unlike other social platforms, it’s easy to get your videos out there too. By simply using relevant hashtags, your video will appear on other user’s ‘For You’ pages. TikTok robots are popular, which adds another layer to the system.

The one trend that has blown up the popularity of TikTok is its trendy dances.

You don’t have to be on the app for long to stumble upon a user doing a dance routine to a catchy pop song. These songs and dances have taken over the app, including everyone who can get the dance moves down. Some users have even included their parents on the trends!

Whether you have the app or not, you’ve probably seen the popular dances somewhere else. It may have been on another social media app or some teenager doing it in a restaurant (Yep, I have witnessed that…). The most popular dance that came from the app is “Renegade.” It had over 29.7 million users attempting the routine. Even celebrities are getting in on the fun.

With the trendy dances come songs that TikTok videos have put into the spotlight. Songs like Doja Cat’s ‘Say So’ has created its own dance trend, as well as songs like ‘ROXANNE’ by Arizona Zervas, ‘Dance Monkey’ by Tones and I, and so many more. There are even TikTok playlists on Spotify inspired by the popularity of the app.

The app is addicting to anyone who falls into its wise ‘For You’ page algorithm, giving you videos the app believes you’ll enjoy based on previous videos you’ve liked. It’s dangerous how easy it is to spend hours at a time scrolling down the never-ending feed. So if you’re stuck in the house, go ahead and give the popular app a download and maybe even try to master one of the trendy routines.
