5 Fashion Trends From The 80s & 90s That Are Making A Comeback

References to the ’80s and ’90s, from high glam and big hair to shoulder pads and jeans, were a huge trend in the fall collections. And history is repeating itself not only on the runways but everywhere you look.  Murphy Brown and Ready Player One, a film set in 2045, featured so many throwbacks. The 80’s and 90’s style is making a comeback in contemporary fashion. Here are the five fashion trends based on the 80’s and 90’s era that are making a comeback.

  1. Haute Homage:

Linebacker/ bold shoulders, jewel tones, pinched waists, the baggy pleated pants, fussy bows, and fab hats—Marc Jacobs has them all in his ode to ’80s exuberance. It seems fitting to revisit this power suit which was inspired by 1980s culture designers Montana, Mugler, Ungaro, and Saint Laurent. A crisp suit with sharp shoulders was a mega-trend among businesswomen of the ’80s, worn by the likes of Bianca Jagger, Grace Jones and Michelle Pfeiffer. The power suit is now as popular as ever — and this sharp cut comes in some equally powerful colors.

  1. Wayfarer Sunglasses by Ray-Ban:

The bold Paris-in-the-’80s sunglasses look is having a revival thanks in part to the overall disco trend. These are a must-have accessory for the upcoming sun season. Grab a pair, and you’ll be walking on sunshine. What did Tom Cruise, The Blues Brothers and Don Henley have in common? That’s right. Their iconic looks depend in part on their classic Wayfarer sunglasses by Ray-Ban.

3. Acid Reign:

Not since Beverly Hills, 90210 has denim been put through the wringer like this with jackets and jeans. This style was popular with the Beverly Hills 90210 characters Brenda Walsh (Shannon Doherty) and Donna Martin(Tori Spelling). Nowadays, this outerwear can range from totally casual to high fashion.

4.Yellow Plaid:

As if! With similar bright yellow plaids appearing in collections from Michael Kors, Versace, and, Balenciaga, it’s hard to escape the allusions to Clueless’s Cher Horowitz (Alicia Silverstone), the ultimate fashion icon of ’90s cinema. The ’90s saw a lot of plaid. However, let us not forget that pre-2000, there was a glorious period during which plaid was crinkled and candy-colored. With a plaid skirt like Cher Horowitz’s in Clueless , no one could knock you off the top of the fashion ladder.

  1. Goth:

A dystopian future in which machines control humans’ perceptions of reality. Prepare for a black maxi reboot as designers mine the dark underworld of modern corporate America for a look that’s like The Matrix. Such famed designers as Alexander McQueen, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Christian Lacroix, and Rodarte began debuting Gothic looks in their runway shows. The models were described as “haute goth” who wore varied looks from flowing, lace gowns to more structured, high-collared suits with black leather accents.  current style icons such as Dita Von Teese and even Victoria Beckham demonstrate the beauty and elegance of Gothic fashion with their sleek, dark outfits and flawless makeup.

These are the five trends seen in fashion that are based on the 80s and 90’s fashion era. The ’80s and ’90s were extraordinary years of excess spirit, over-the-top fun, and carefree indulgence which is why these fashion styles are re-emerging and becoming popular again. Fashion designers have cited ’80s preppies and ’90s activewear ads as catalysts for these designs because, after a long period of minimalism, people want to have a lot more fun with fashion now.
