Everyone deserves a little treat every now and again. And if you need to watch your portion size, this recipe is a perfect addition to your cookbook. Making jar cakes is a fun and creative way to serve individual portions of cake. Check out this basic recipe and instructions to guide you through the process:

Ingredients:

  • 1 and 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 and 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup milk

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven:
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Prepare the jars:
Wash and dry the jars thoroughly. Make sure they are heatproof and safe for baking. You can use small mason jars or any other oven-safe jars.
  3. Mix dry ingredients:
In a bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
  4. Cream the butter and sugar:
In a separate large bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  5. Add eggs and vanilla:
Beat in the eggs, one at a time. Then, add the vanilla extract, and mix until well combined.
  6. Combine wet and dry ingredients:
Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the sour cream and milk. Begin and end with the dry ingredients, mixing just until combined.
  7. Fill jars:
Spoon the batter into the jars, filling them about halfway. This allows room for the cake to rise.
  8. Bake:
Place the jars on a baking sheet. Bake in the preheated oven for about 20-25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cakes comes out clean.
  9. Cool:
Allow the jar cakes to cool completely before adding frosting or toppings.
  10. Frost and decorate:
Once the cakes are cool, add your favorite frosting or toppings. You can get creative with different flavors and decorations.
  11. Seal and store:
If you want to give these jar cakes as gifts, make sure they are completely cool before you seal the jars with lids. Store in the refrigerator until ready to enjoy.

Remember to adjust the baking time depending on the size of the jars and your oven’s characteristics. If you don’t feel the most confident starting out, make cupcakes and cut them in half to make cake parfait cups. Enjoy your delicious and cute jar cakes!
