5 Reasons Sharing A Birthday With Your Significant Other Is Amazing

Some have called it fate, others the work of witchcraft, but really, it’s just pure chance. My husband and I have the same birthday; not just the same day and month but the same year, as well.

All the time that separates us is just forty-five little minutes.

Aside from being the biggest coincidence of our lives (unless it was witches), having the same birthday has some awesome side-effects. Here are five reasons that having the same birthday as your significant other is the best.

  1. It’s Like a Second Christmas

Christmas is an exciting time of year, so who wouldn’t want two of them? While dual birthdays might not have the build-up and the extravagant decorations, they have one of the hallmarks of our favourite winter holiday: gift exchanges. So we treat our birthdays just like Christmas. We buy each other presents, sit around our makeshift tree (our beloved lemon tree sproutlings) and exchange them as if it were a warmer, sunnier December 25th. The best bit? It’s just the two of us.

2. It’s an Introvert’s Dream Come True

Introverts have an eternal dilemma when it comes to birthdays.

On the bright side, it’s a day all about us but on the other hand, it’s a day all about us. You know what I mean?

Anyways, the best thing about sharing a birthday with my husband isn’t just that it draws the attention away from me; it’s also that I get to share the limelight with my best friend every single year.

I can listen during the awkward seven hours it takes for people to sing “happy birthday” to me, and accept the fact I’m another year older while holding my love’s hand as we experience it together.

3. You Never Forget Your Significant Other’s Birthday

As we get swept up in life, we may forget the most important things, from dentist appointments to anniversaries. Sharing a birthday with your partner means you are far less likely to forget this special event. And if you somehow do manage to forget their birthday, they’ll forgive you as soon as you remind them that you forgot your birthday too.

4. Having Fun Watching Airport/Bank Employees Double-check the Dates

When we first started opening joint bank accounts and taking flights together, we got to share a silent inside joke. A quick look at our passports and at the check-in desk attendant or account manager rapidly blinking and doing a double take followed by the question: “Which one of you put your birthdate down wrong?” Explaining to staff questioning their sanity after a long shift that my husband and I really are birthday twins never gets old!

5. It Brings You And Your Significant Other Closer Together

Celebrating anything together is a great opportunity to bond, but there’s something special about knowing that whatever the occasion, you will always celebrate all of the most special days together.

Not even having the day you were born all to yourself makes you feel much closer to your partner.

Maybe sharing a birthday with my boyfriend was a little uncomfortable at first, but that was long before I realised how amazing it can be. Our ten birthdays together have been more than enough to convince me that I wouldn’t want it any other way. And you know what?

I’m certain our matching birthdays mean that we were never meant to be in this world without each other.
