Where You Can Escape To For Some Autumn Sunshine

Woman Enjoying Warm Vacation in Southern Europe

As the country moves into autumn and the days get colder and darker, I find myself longing for the warmth and sunshine of summer. While cosy nights in have their charm, September and October can be the perfect time for me to head abroad and enjoy sunnier skies.

For quick European getaways and longer-haul inspiration, I like to check out my top picks to top up on vitamin D and make the most of off-peak travel below.

Southern Europe’s Reliable Warmth

For a quick escape that doesn’t require long-haul flights, I’ve found southern Europe to be a dependable choice. Italy, Spain, Portugal, and Greece regularly see average October temperatures in the low-to-mid 20s°C, with plenty of sunshine hours. Cities like Seville and Athens offer plenty of cultural sightseeing with warm, dry afternoons, and the Algarve’s golden beaches remain inviting well into October.

Travelling outside of peak summer often means I get cheaper accommodation and fewer crowds, giving me a more relaxed experience. Shoulder season flights can also be substantially cheaper than average summer fares.

North Africa and the Canary Islands

Morocco and Algeria stay warm well into November, and I love that places like Marrakech average daytime highs around 28°C, with cooler evenings perfect for wandering the medina. I can stroll through Parc El Harti or take a traditional hammam without worrying about overheating.

For volcanic landscapes and family-friendly beach resorts, I often head to one of the Canary Islands. Tenerife and Lanzarote have long been favourites among British holidaymakers, making it easy for me to make friends. Daytime highs are typically between 24 and 26°C in October, which is perfect for a lazy beach day.

Further-Afield Options Without Breaking the Bank

If I’m willing to travel a little further, Turkey and Cyprus make excellent mid-haul options. Both destinations extend that summer feeling well into November, with coastal towns such as Antalya or Paphos offering sunny highs of around 23–25°C.

October feels like the perfect time to explore Turkey’s nature in pleasant temperatures. As a hiking enthusiast, I love the idea of taking on the Lycian Way along the coast, or soaking in the valleys of Cappadocia amidst the changing colours. In Cyprus, I make time to explore the Kato Paphos Archaeological Park and Kourion without the oppressive summer heat.

Practical Tips

I always check FCDO travel advice for up-to-date guidance on entry requirements and safety before booking a trip. Looking at climate averages for my chosen destination helps me pack appropriately and know what to expect.

When I’m feeling spontaneous, browsing last-minute holidays can unlock great value. These packages often combine flights and accommodation at reduced rates, making it easier for me to leave British skies behind for golden sunshine—without months of planning.
