What It’s Like To Attend College In Your Hometown

When I started my final semester at university, I remember thinking about the fact that I had decided to attend college in my hometown. It’s something I never really thought about—I knew I wanted to stay close to home, get the degree at this college, and several other things that made my college appeal to me—but as I met more people, I remembered that most didn’t go to college in their hometown.

It gave me an interesting perspective that I wouldn’t have had if I had gone away to college in another town.

For those of you out there who’ve been in my shoes, or wonder what it’s like, here are some things I’ve experienced from going to college in my hometown.

1. It feels familiar

You recognize street names, areas in town, restaurants, grocery stores, and other places. You know your town well, and being in college doesn’t feel that far from home. That provided a sense of comfort, especially during my early college years.

2. It also feels different

I was hardly on my school’s campus before I transferred. l. I wasn’t familiar with the campus landscape and learned a lot about the environment there. No matter what your city is, there’s always something new to learn about it!

3. You meet people from around the world

Most of my college friends lived in my home state, but some came from out of state, and some lived in other countries. It was interesting to hear their perspectives on my hometown from an outsider’s point of view, as well as learn about their hometown and what it’s like there.

4. You forget not everyone is from your hometown

Sometimes, I’d mention a street name/area of town/another obscure part of my hometown that only a native or someone who’d done extensive research on it would know, and people are confused. It’s similar to my reaction whenever a friend mentions living in another area I’ve never been to before. This helped me learn how to better explain things and not to assume what people do and don’t know.

5. You wonder what it’s like going to college in another town

Throughout my college years, I definitely wondered how my college experience would have differed if I had gone away. I lived at home and not on campus, so I always wondered what that would be like. What about the scenery? How would I get to know other people? Would I ever stay on campus over break? It’s something you never know.

Somehow, going to college in your hometown feels familiar and unfamiliar all at once.

I knew about most areas in my hometown before college, but there were areas I hadn’t explored yet and only had gone to because of students who had been there. And of course, being on a campus feels different than any experience I had; coming home felt the same way.

There’s a strange yet wonderful mix of feeling at home and away from home when you attend college in your hometown, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

  5. Staying in your hometown for college really does have its own vibe – it’s comfortable, familiar, and you don’t have to rebuild your life from scratch. But yeah, sometimes it gets a bit too predictable, so I try to find fun ways to switch things up after classes. Lately I’ve been getting into online casinos just for some light entertainment, and that’s how I found https://bigclash-ca.com/ .
