We love to play video games to escape the stresses of everyday life. But for some of us, fighting monsters or shooting zombies doesn’t spark joy. Instead, we’d rather play cozy games where your main objective isn’t to fight but simply live.
While most people know about Animal Crossing and Stardew Valley, there’s a much wider world of cozy games out there that don’t require farming or working for a sadistic capitalist raccoon.
Personally, I don’t like farming simulators, but it can be hard to find cozy games outside of this niche. So I’ve compiled a list of seven cozy games that you might not have heard of before and require little to no farming.
1. Calico
Mix running a cat cafe with some magic shenanigans, and you get a truly unique game! In this game, you create sweet treats in a magical watercolor world. In addition to running and decorating your cafe, you can also explore the world, help townspeople, and collect animals.
This game also has a lot of magical elements, one of the most fun being the ability to enlarge your pets and ride them around the world. This is the ultimate wind-down game while also giving you plenty to do.
2. Ooblets
This game has top-tier cutesy vibes. Ooblets is like Pokemon but with dance battles! While it does have farming elements, that’s not the only aspect of the game.
Ooblets has something for everyone, as you can focus on the intriguing mystery story, farming, gathering adorable ooblets, dance battling, running a shop, and more. You play as a new resident of a town helping the mayor restore the internet and discovering the secrets of the Ooblet High Council.
This is my favorite video game since Animal Crossing: New Horizons, so I highly recommend giving it a go!
3. It Takes Two
This game won Game of the Year at the 2021 Game Awards for a good reason! The heartfelt story and fun gameplay make it a must-have for cozy gamers.
In this two-player game, you and a friend play as a soon-to-be-divorced couple who get turned into their daughter’s toys. Suddenly, their mundane house becomes a wonderland of obstacles and kooky characters as they have to navigate back to their daughter and break the spell.
This game requires teamwork, as each obstacle requires both players to work together. But besides a few boss battles, you can take your time with this game and explore all the clever easter eggs, which qualifies it as a cozy game. It’s one of the best games I’ve ever played.
4. Fashion Dreamer
If you loved dress-up games as a kid, then you’ll love this game. Fashion Dreamer allows you to design outfits and style them. You can also create your own design displays and post pictures to your in-game social media, allowing you to gain followers, which unlocks more designs.
I love that you can design outfits for other players, allowing so much freedom for creativity and collaboration. And it got me thinking differently about how I dress in real life!
5. Röki
If you want to immerse yourself in a game’s story, look no further than this game. In Röki, you play as a girl trying to save her little brother from a world filled with fantastic monsters inspired by Scandinavian folklore. This game utilizes found objects to create compelling puzzles with some beautiful art to keep you sucked into the story.
6. Monster Prom
A multiplayer competitive dating simulator? Count me in! You should especially play this game during spooky season, but it’s great any time of year.
In Monster Prom, you play as a monster teen looking for a prom date. But you face many hurdles trying to impress your crush, especially when playing with a friend who’s trying to sabotage you! One of the best aspects of this game is just how many endings you can unlock.
And you can find yourself in so many situations, from performing a blood ritual to fighting with an interdimensional prince. This means you get a lot of value for your money because of the replayability.
7. Baldur’s Gate 3
When you think of Baldur’s Gate, you probably don’t think “cozy,” but hear me out. In this game, you explore an expansive world where you encounter nearly endless options, meet quirky characters you can build relationships with, and uncover some compelling mysteries.
Yes, this game has combat, but it’s turn-based, so you can take as much time as you want before deciding your next move. If you’re interested in Dungeons and Dragons but feel wary of the combat, set those worries aside. Baldur’s Gate 3 is incredibly fun and not stressful or overwhelming to play.
