Why You Should Try A ‘Float Spa’ On Your Next Self-Care Day

The past few months were incredibly overwhelming, and a whirlwind of responsibilities left me little time to breathe. Balancing a demanding course load, job interviews, medical appointments, dance classes, and band rehearsals made me feel like life pulled me in every direction.

I felt like I had no opportunity to prioritize my well-being.

This year, though, I made a commitment to devote time to self-care and self-love. I love my active lifestyle, but I’m now actively choosing to take care of myself, even when life gets especially busy. Whether I treat myself to mani-pedis or try new forms of self-care, like my first Brazilian wax (ouch!), I want to let myself relax more often and feel better than ever.

One “bucket list” experience for my “self-care year” is visiting a spa. Traditional spas always intimidated me — thoughts of hot stones and potentially painful massages turn me off.

However, when I learned about “float spas,” I knew that I wanted to try one.

Flotation therapy involves resting in a sensory deprivation tank and floating in salt water. This process may sound outlandish, but this type of spa treatment offers many impactful mental and physical benefits.

Curious about the effects of flotation therapy, I booked myself an appointment at Float Madison. When I entered the “float spa,” all I could think about was my overwhelming schedule. I wondered if only being left with my own thoughts would add to my stress. Despite my concerns, though, I decided to embrace the opportunity to potentially relax, unwind, and escape the chaos of my everyday life for a little bit.

After receiving instructions from the spa owner, I entered a private room with a float tank.

As I settled into the tank, I initially struggled to relax and let go of my stress. However, I could hear gentle music playing in the background, which relaxed me. The floating sensation also gradually brought me a sense of calmness and control.

After an hour, an automated voice signaled the end of my session.

I showered and took some time to pamper myself in the bathroom before enjoying some complimentary tea in the relaxation room. I went into the experience feeling doubtful that floatation therapy could relax me, but it helped me release the tension I’ve felt while coping with all of my responsibilities. In fact, I loved my time at the spa so much that I’m even considering becoming a member so that I can add “floating” to my weekly routine.

If you haven’t already, I highly recommend trying out a local “float spa.” When life feels hectic, flotation therapy is an incredible way to prioritize your well-being and show yourself a little extra love.
