6 Life-Saving Hacks For Girls With Curly Hair

Curly hair is both a blessing and a curse. Some days, my waves are beach-worthy and Hollywood-ready, but other days, I wake up and immediately know it will be a “top knot” day. While reaching for a flat iron on “extra curly” days can be tempting, I’m now learning to embrace my curls. If you’re a “curly girl” like I am, here are six hair tips that will leave your tresses looking their most beautiful:

1. Use the “bowl method.”

This method for giving your curls more definition is blowing up on TikTok — and for good reason. After you shower, fill a bowl or pot with warm (not boiling hot) water. Then,  apply a leave-in conditioner or curl cream and dip your hair in the water bowl. Next, scrunch your hair and watch your curls begin to form. Repeat this process if you need to. Your hair may have a “slimy” texture, but that’s just because your conditioner is coating your hair and defining your curls!

2. Use anti-frizz hairspray.

I got my hair done in April, and my hairdresser recommended using an anti-frizz heat protectant spray on my curly hair. I tried it out, and it worked amazingly, almost like keratin treatment in a bottle. Just wash your hair and spray the product on. Blow out your hair to activate the spray, and you’ll instantly have smooth hair. Dream Coat spray lasts for three washes — and you can find it at Sephora!

3. Invest in a good curl cream.

If I’ve learned anything on my curly hair journey, it’s the fact that hydration equals beautiful curls. The best way to hydrate your hair is to apply hair cream when you want to show off your curls. The best part is that you can use curl cream with other hair care methods (like the “bowl method”) or use it by itself. Hair cream is essential for living your best (curly) life!

4. Ditch the “hair towel.”

It’s part of your routine: you leave the shower and immediately put your hair in a towel. But did you know your “hair towel” could be why your curls frizz? Instead of a roughly textured towel, use an old T-shirt to dry your hair. The shirt will dry your hair, leaving enough moisture to define your curls.

5. Rinse your hair in the morning.

If you wash your hair at night, your hair probably looks messy when you wake up in the morning. To rescue your curly hair, try saving your wash for the morning. If you need to wash your hair at night, just give it a quick morning rinse to smooth it out and apply your favorite hair cream. Your hair will dry quickly, and your curls will look gorgeous when it does!

6. “Pineapple” your curly hair.

Don’t worry — you don’t have to rub a pineapple on your head for your curls to look stunning. Instead of tying your hair up with a regular elastic ponytail, use a spiral elastic or a stretchy scrunchie to avoid breakage. Then, try not to “rake” your hair into the ponytail. Simply smooth your hair into the flexible and ensure that the hair in your ponytail gathers on top of your head like a pineapple. This “pineapple effect” hairdo is the perfect way to prep your hair for bedtime because it’ll prevent you from rubbing your curls against your pillow and messing them up in your sleep. And if you want to try a curly ponytail in the daytime, this “pineapple” style is cute!

If you’re looking to “go curly” more often, there are many great ways to keep your curls looking defined and voluminous without de-frizzing your hair partway through the day. Let your tresses flow — your hair mustn’t be straight to be beautiful!
