The 9 Biggest Fashion Mistakes You Have To Stop Making

For a lot of us, looking super put together everyday requires a lot of effort. All those fashion bloggers have us thinking they #wokeuplikethat but that’s not even close to the truth. Here’s the thing ladies, there are 9 fashion faux pas that I think we may be guilty of, but there’s also an easy way to fix every single one. Feel free to thank me later.

1. Overlooking the power of your underwear

This is key girls. If you don’t know what bra size you are, get on out there tomorrow and get yourself fitted. It takes all of ten minutes and will have AMAZING results. Ill-fitting underwear will ruin whatever you put on top of it, and you won’t feel like the TEN OUTTA TEN that you are. AND – wearing beautiful matching underwear will make you feel like a total GODDESS. There will be nothing you cannot conquer, no job you cannot get, no pub quiz you cannot win.

Go matching.

2. Buying something just because it’s on sale

WHY do we do this? There’s no way any man goes into a clothing store and is like ‘OMG it’s half price, it’s a bit small but I was gonna go on a diet anyway. Not sure about the color, maybe it’s the light in here. I don’t know if I like it…GREAT, I’LL TAKE IT.’ Stop doing that. I love a bargain as much as the next girl, but you have to be very selective; otherwise you just end up with all sorts of crap you never wanted in the first place. It will make its way to the charity shop a year later having NEVER been worn because let’s be honest, it looks like SHIT (don’t take it personally, it probably looks like shit on everyone).

3. Following trends like a sheep

There are SO many trends each season, they are there to inspire you and give you ideas, but feel free to take them or leave them. If you’re not feeling something, don’t try and mould yourself into it, just because 80% of the female population is wearing it. There comes a time when you have to face up to the cold hard fact that you are not, and will never be, a girl who can rock a pair of culottes. I have now accepted that, and moved on.

4. Not knowing how to make the best of your beautiful figure

We ALL come in different shapes and sizes, none more beautiful than the next. No matter what, there are clothes out there that will look INCREDIBLE on you, you just have to know what you’re looking for. We’re in the age of Google so this information is at your fingertips! Check out this article which explains that there are 7 body shapes and how to dress best for each one. See, I’ve just sorted you right out. You’re welcome.

5. Buying things that do not match with anything you currently own

This is a tricky one, because you might see a cute top you love and just HAVE to buy, but it won’t go with any of the skirts/trousers you have. Guess what this means? Correct! You won’t wear it. Get in the habit of buying pieces that work with what you already have. Unless you’re buying a whole new outfit, put the top down, and RUN. Go get yourself a new lipstick instead, you can’t go wrong there, and you’ll forget all about how cute that top was.

6. Not realizing that being BASIC can be a good thing

This one is hard for me, because I will never be drawn to a plain white tee, or a pair of tailored black trousers. Life is too short for boring shit like that if you ask me. No offense if that’s your look, it’s just not for me. But I have come to realise that sometimes, you need a plain vest top. It really helps when putting outfits together if you have some staples to rely on.

7. Holding on to things that you NEVER wear

This is what I live by in all areas of my life: IF IN DOUBT, CHUCK IT OUT. Everything gets this treatment – old receipts, leftovers in the fridge, boys… If you can’t remember when you last wore it, you probably never will. It was likely one of those half-off purchases you made when you were on your period and not thinking clearly. No time like the present to let it go. Be ruthless!

8. Buying 3 average tops, instead of investing in one timeless piece that you will keep forever

Today, fashion is far more accessible to everybody (YAY!). But sometimes we buy a lot of shit just cos it’s cheap. You can get a new set of lingerie for the same price of a Starbucks! This is all well and good, but I think we need to be selective. It’s nice to save up for a while and buy yourself that designer handbag you’ve been eyeing for aaaaaaages. And when you work out the cost per wear, they end up being totally worth the extra pennies (that’s how I justify it to myself anyway…)

9. Thinking you have to be rich to look like a million dollars

No, just NO. It’s true a lot of celebs look great because they can afford a stylist. Only a few have a true sense of style, the rest just make up for it with plenty of cash to flash. You might not have that, and guess what? While it would be lovely waking up as a millionaire each day, you don’t need that in order to SLAY.

Fashion is all about having a good eye for things, knowing what looks good on you, and being thrifty. If you wear something with confidence, 9 times out of 10 you’ll look good. I don’t think there’s much more to it than that. Don’t make it complicated!
