Raise your hand if you’ve changed your hair color multiple times in a matter of months. I know I’m not the only one who’s guilty of that. Growing up, my sister was attending beauty school, and I was her guinea pig. I got addicted to dying my hair, because it can be SO fun. I would flip flop back and forth, blonde, brunette, redhead, over and over. It’s just been in the last year that I’ve settled on a color and maintained it.
Now, ladies, I’m a feminist, believe me. But, I think it’s kind of fascinating to see what guys think of hair, specifically if a girl consistently dyes and changes it. Especially because European/Caucasian people mainly identify each other by their hair (seriously, there’s a crazy study on it), I wondered what effect that had on guys and what they saw.
I went out to a handful of guys, and asked their opinions on girls hair color, hair dye, and if hair color had an effect on how they felt/their physical attraction.
“I’m probably less picky than some guys with girls hair. For me, it’s not a huge deal. I could date a girl with pretty much any hair color. I do have a weird preference for redheads…The right kind though. And I think I’d rather have a girls natural hair color, but I wouldn’t be against a little dye every now and then.”

“Definitely I notice. Hair is important. I like blonde best. I don’t usually like it when girls dye their hair. Natural hair color is best.”
– Rex, 22
“I do notice color! However, I don’t have a preference, I just like hair to look natural. I don’t like when girls dye their hair every other week and make it look weird. But other than that, as long as it looks like a fairly natural color, I don’t mind what color it is. I do, however, like when girls dye their hair more abstract colors like pink, blue, or green. I think that shows self expression. Sometimes I feel like when girls dye their hair a bunch of times or go back and forth from blonde to brunette it makes them seem insecure or indecisive, wild colors show boldness, character, and individuality, and I really like that.”
“When asked if I notice girls hair color, I would say that I notice all aspects of her. Both physical features and personality traits. While hair color is purely cosmetic, I do have a preference. I prefer blonde over brunette, and natural over colored hair. However that does not mean that I do not like brunette or colored hair. Now with colored/dyed hair. I prefer natural because I like the appearance of it being natural. There are instances when coloring one’s hair, that I would prefer it over natural. Generally speaking I prefer blonde and natural over other hair colors.”
– Justin, 22
“I ALWAYS notice a girl’s hair color. Whether or not a girl dyes her hair doesn’t really matter to me. Personally, I’m attracted to the more conservative hairstyles. I guess I like brown the most, but honestly I just like it when a girl looks like she respects herself.”
– Jeff, 25
“I am happy to announce that boys don’t matter and your hair is your choice, so if it makes you happy, please do it.”
– Seth, 19
When I had originally asked these questions, I was very aware that some guys would be more open to artificially colored hair than others. As a girl who has switched her hair color over 20 times, I automatically want to defend myself to anyone who says that dying my hair is unattractive or unhealthy. So what if it is? Dying my hair makes me feel fabulous.
A million people could tell me that they prefer natural blondes, and I’d still be over here, a bottle bleach blonde, and I am 100% okay with that. My hair makes me happy, and your hair should make you happy. You do you, girl.
