4 Creative Ways To Express Yourself

We get it: being an adult is hard, and it’s busy. There are a lot of things we leave behind as we get older, and more responsibilities are piled onto our shoulders. More often than not, the creative outlets are among the first to go, despite the joy and benefits they can bring. Creating something and expressing our artistic sides can bring satisfaction into our lives, yet it can be hard to fit that into a full schedule. Here are some examples of easy and unique ways to express your creative self, destress, and have fun!

1. Make a reading journal.

One creative outlet I picked up last year, and absolutely love, is journaling about every book I read. My journal included quotes that I liked, new words that I learned, a summary of my thoughts, and a rating out of 5 stars. I also made a “Book Bingo” listing all the qualities of books I wanted to read that year (like a queer main character or a story without romance), and checking them off as I finished each book.

This option is great because there are endless ways to approach this activity that suit each individual’s creative abilities and desired level of effort. I started with a completely blank journal and hand-drew every entry and activity I wanted to include. If that’s not your style, there are premade reading journals you can find on Etsy, or if you’re looking for a cheaper option, you can find and print templates online. No matter how creative you are, a reading journal is an easy way to get started on your creative journey, and it’s something to look back on years down the line!

2. Paint your garden, one rock at a time.

This is a trick I picked up from a family I nannied for many years ago, and I still love it to this day. Once a week, the kids and I had rock-painting day. On this day, we each picked a new rock from the garden, cleaned it, dried it, and then painted whatever we wanted on it. Slowly but surely, soon the garden was decked with colorful, flowery rocks. While each one had its own charm, all together they made the whole garden look bright and fun. And, painting the rocks was a relaxing activity for everyone involved. It’s a win-win!

3. Pre-shower makeup.

Makeup is one of the most fun ways to express your creativity. And right before a shower is the best time to try out some new stuff! Maybe it’s a new technique you found on TikTok. Or maybe it’s trying out that bold eyeshadow you’ve never been brave enough to try before. Sometimes, you just need to see what you would look like as an alien with blue skin, purple contour, and orange lipstick. And when you’re all makeup-ed out, jump in the shower and watch the pretty colors melt away.

4. Try a new ‘do.

I know in my case, I can often neglect the power of a fun hairstyle. But doing something with your luscious locks can take a look from great to absolutely serving. Whether it’s braids, buns, pigtails, or ponytails, it’s nice to change it up sometimes, both for your look and yourself. Trying on a new look can boost your aura and your confidence. And if you’re ever feeling stumped when looking for something new to try, Pinterest has an endless stream of new styles. Short hair, long hair, straight, curly, thin, or thick, you can find something for everybody.

Yes, being creative can feel overwhelming when you have so much on your plate. But there are easy ways to implement creativity into your everyday life. If you have your own creative suggestions, share them with us in the comments below! And remember, taking the time to express yourself and let go of stress is never a waste of time.
