Slather Up: 4 Easy Ways You Can Protect Your Skin This Summer

skin

As we transition into the warmer months, we need to take some extra precautions to keep our skin safe. The sun’s ultraviolet (UV) radiation can wreak havoc on our skin from the inside out. And we’re not just referring to a gnarly sunburn!

Regardless if you’re exposed to UVA or UVB radiation, your complexion is extremely vulnerable to the sun. In as few as 15 minutes, UV rays can severely damage your skin. Overexposure can lead to health issues like sunspots, premature wrinkling, redness, inflammation, heat rash, and even skin cancer. Needless to say, it’s time to take preventative measures now before it’s too late!

To keep your skin protected, follow these four tips:

1. Apply And Reapply Broad Spectrum Sunscreen

Obviously, sunscreen is a must, but many of us continue to skip this step in our daily regimen. In fact, a recent study revealed that only 14% of American men and 30% of American women regularly apply sunscreen to their face and other areas of exposed skin before heading outside for more than an hour. Yikes! Therefore, if you haven’t already, pick up some broad spectrum sunscreen and apply it during your morning skincare routine. For optimal protection, try to find a water-resistant broad spectrum sunscreen that fights against both UVA and UVB radiation. Also, remember to reapply a few times throughout the day!

2. Use Anti-Aging Cream At Night

Incorporating anti-aging skin care into your routine is an effective way to combat premature wrinkling and other tell-tale signs of aging. Keep in mind, however, that most anti-aging creams contain active ingredients that can heighten your risk of sun damage you apply it during the day. Therefore, if you use an anti-aging cream with active ingredients like retin-A or niacinamide, it’s probably best to use it at night. This will allow you to adequately maintain your youthful complexion whilst protecting your skin from the sun.

3. Use Spray Tan Instead Of Sunbathing

Although most of us aspire to achieve a sun-kissed glow throughout the spring and summertime, there is such a thing as soaking up too much sun. Rather than spending your time laying out under the beaming, hot sun for hours on end, consider treating yourself to a professional spray tan or purchasing your very own self-tanning serum. Taking this route will not only save you time, but also keep your skin safe from the dangerous effects of excess sun-exposure.

4. Accessorize Accordingly

Accessorizing your outfits to preserve the state of your skin is a great way to protect yourself in style! Whether that’s with a stylish beach umbrella, a cute pair of sunglasses, or even a large, trendy sun hat, there are plenty of ways to accessorize accordingly and help elevate both your outfit and overall outdoor experience! And the best part? Your accessories will serve as a barrier between you and the sun, so upgrade your spring and summer sun accessories today!

Exposing your skin to the sun can be more hazardous than you know. With these sun safety tips, though, you’re sure to keep your skin in tip-top shape throughout the spring and summer.
