How Pork Rinds Became My Go-To Afternoon Snack

For most of my life, pork rinds lived in a specific place in my mind: the bottom shelf of a gas station, next to the beef jerky and the questionable energy shots. I was not a pork rind person. I was a chips-and-hummus person, a pretzels person, a “grab whatever crunchy thing is nearest” person. So how one bag ended up rearranging my entire snack drawer is a little embarrassing.

It started because I always felt hungry around 3 p.m.

The Afternoon Slump That Chips Couldn’t Fix

I have this problem. Around mid-afternoon, my brain quits, and I go looking for something crunchy. For years, that meant a fistful of chips, then another, then the vague guilt of realizing I’d eaten most of the bag and still wanted more. Highly-processed snacks never seemed to keep me full for long. They show up, say hi, and leave me hungry again before the afternoon’s even over.

A friend of mine, one of those annoyingly consistent gym people, tossed me a bag of pork rinds during a road trip and said, “just try them.” I made a face. Then I ate the whole bag. And then I went quiet for a while, thinking about my life.

What got me wasn’t the crunch, though the crunch is unreal. It was that I felt full afterward. Not stuffed. Full.

Why They Held Me Over

Later I looked into why they kept me full. Pork rinds consists mostly of protein and fat with little to no carbohydrate, which made sense of what I’d noticed. Healthline also notes that many pork rinds are carb-free and relatively high in protein, a nutrient known to help promote fullness. Suddenly, my usual 3 p.m. snack hunt made a lot more sense. One small bag did what three handfuls of pretzels never could, at least for me.

I’m not going to sit here and tell you pork rinds are healthy food. They’re a fried, salty snack, and the sodium adds up fast, so I keep an eye on that. But as a swap for the mindless chip habit? It worked for me in a way I didn’t see coming.

Falling Down The Flavor Rabbit Hole

The other thing nobody warned me about is the flavors. I assumed pork rinds came in one flavor: salty. Wrong. I eventually started looking beyond the grocery store and realized porkrinds.com carried far more flavors than I knew existed, and suddenly my one weird snack became a whole rotating lineup.

The vinegar ones are my personal villain origin story. Dangerously good. I also learned people crush them up and use them like breadcrumbs, which feels like cheating – and I love it.

Anyway, I don’t want to oversell a bag of fried pig skin. It’s a snack, not a personality. But if you’re the kind of person who hits an afternoon wall and wants something that crunches and doesn’t leave you rummaging for more twenty minutes later, consider trying some pork rinds.

I still keep chips around for the record. I’m not a monster. But these days, when 3 p.m. comes for me, I reach for the crunchy thing that fights back a little.
