Yet alongside its growing influence comes a more complex question: how do these trends affect how romance and relationships are understood today?

One of the most prominent trends on BookTok in recent years has been the rise of dark romance. Videos about these books regularly garner millions of views, driving demand and encouraging authors and publishers to produce similar stories. While the genre’s popularity is undeniable, it also raises important concerns about how relationships are portrayed in today’s pop culture.

A central issue is how language is reshaped. In many dark romance narratives, behaviors that would typically be considered warning signs are shown through a more appealing lens. Control is presented as care, jealousy as emotional depth, and obsession as evidence of love. This shift does not simply alter storytelling, but it changes how these dynamics are interpreted, making harmful patterns appear less immediately recognizable.

The Aestheticization of Harmful Dynamics
