When I moved out after my divorce, I left with very little, physically and emotionally. My new place didn’t feel like home; it felt like survival. But I was determined to change that. I didn’t have much money, but I had creativity, determination, and Pinterest boards full of inspiration. Slowly but surely, I turned a cold apartment into a warm space that felt like mine.
Here’s how I made it happen—and how you can, too.
1. I Embraced the Power of Thrift Stores
You’d be amazed at what you can find secondhand. I found a cozy armchair for $30, a barely-used coffee table for $15, and a set of mismatched (but charming) dinnerware that made every meal feel special. Don’t sleep on Facebook Marketplace or local “Buy Nothing” groups—they helped me fill my home without draining my bank account.
2. I DIYed Like a Boss
I’m not a carpenter, but I learned how to paint, reupholster, and even build a headboard with a staple gun and some ambition. I watched countless YouTube tutorials and turned old furniture into something I was proud of. A little bit of elbow grease can go a long way in making a space feel like yours.
3. I Let My Walls Tell My Story
Art doesn’t have to be expensive. I framed old photos, handwritten notes, and my kids’ drawings. I printed out quotes that resonated with me during this new chapter and put them in dollar store frames. My walls became a reflection of my healing process and a daily reminder of how far I’d come.
4. I Made Room for Peace
One of the most important things I did was carve out a little corner of peace for myself. I set up a reading nook by the window with a fuzzy blanket, fairy lights, and a plant I’m trying not to kill. It’s not big, but it’s mine—and that matters.
5. I Got Symbolic With My Space
I didn’t just fill my space—I rebuilt it. Every piece I added felt like a small act of reclaiming myself. A new rug in the living room, a candle on the windowsill, even the literal construction stones I used in a DIY garden border out back—all of it reminded me that I was building a new life, one choice at a time.
Home isn’t about perfection—it’s about feeling safe, seen, and supported.
If you’re going through a big transition—whether it’s a divorce, a breakup, or just moving out on your own for the first time—remember that creating a space you love doesn’t have to cost a fortune. It just has to reflect you.
And trust me, you’re worth decorating for.

For me home decoration and space waves has helped me to relax after many stressful days.
