It’s the end of another school year, a time to both look forward to summer and reflect on how far we’ve come. Reflecting on this time of year made me think about how the students I helped during my senior year of high school have now graduated from high school themselves.
My students have now finished an important chapter in their lives and will now begin a new one, whether they choose to go to college, enter the workforce, or take time to pursue their passions. This life transition can be difficult, but optimism will help these graduates move forward.
As we go through life, we often face unexpected challenges that can diminish our positive outlook.
But it’s nice to have moments of excitement about our life trajectories that others can’t dampen with their opinions. While this isn’t always the reality, graduation season is typically full of optimism for new grads. They believe that they can and will accomplish their goals.
This time of year is a blank canvas, an opportunity to begin a new chapter in life. Graduates can choose paths that feel the most authentic to them, cultivate new interests, and take advantage of the opportunities that life hands them.
Graduation season begins with optimism and ends with a sense of accomplishment in going after our dreams. Graduating from any level of schooling demonstrates the ability to put consistent effort towards completing a goal, and when graduates know that their determination led them to complete school, they’ll realize that their grit can help them towards any other goals that they may have.
So how can we harness this excitement from graduation season?
What if we believe that we can fulfill our dreams? We may end up achieving bigger goals, making deeper connections with others, and forging memories that’ll last a lifetime.
You don’t have to have graduated this year to have a positive mindset, but adopting the excitement that many graduates have can help you live your life to the fullest. The power lies in maintaining this optimism long after graduation season ends.
With more life experience can come more hopelessness about the future, but you don’t have to live that way. It can be easy to feel like you’re going through the motions, but if you find little sparks of optimism in your daily life, try to hold onto them. When you do, you have the opportunity to change your life — and the narrative you tell yourself about it. Don’t let your life become so dull that you lose your sense of hope.
You never know what’ll happen when you see your life through the hopeful eyes of new graduates.
If recent graduates can remain confident in their ability to achieve their goals, so can you. A little bit of optimism can take you further than you realize.

I like the idea of embracing optimism, especially from new grads. Do you think it can really change the vibe at weddings?
