Fed is best for everyone, no matter who you are
The phrase “fed is best” is often associated with infant nutrition, emphasizing that whether a baby is breastfed or formula-fed, the most important thing is that they are nourished. But this concept shouldn’t stop at infants—it should apply to everyone, no matter their age, background, or situation. Food is essential, and the simple act of eating should never be judged.
Food Drives Show the True Meaning of “Fed Is Best”
For over 10 years, I ran and founded a group called Youth Changing the World in my community. For two years, my group started an initiative called Feeding the Hudson Valley, which was dedicated to addressing food insecurity. Over that time, we organized 23 food drives—not just during the holidays but throughout the year. Our mission was to highlight that hunger doesn’t take a break, even after the festive season ends.
Most of the food we provided consisted of nonperishable and processed items. Occasionally, we tailored drives to meet dietary restrictions for specific families, but the majority of the time, we focused on what was accessible and could be distributed quickly.
The response was overwhelmingly positive. The families we served were simply grateful to have food—any food—to put on their tables. For them, it wasn’t about whether the food was organic, fresh, or perfectly balanced. It was about having something to eat when they needed it most.
Fed Is Best: A Universal Truth
While society often focuses on the nutritional needs of babies and toddlers, the principle of “fed is best” should extend to everyone. For example:
- If someone is struggling with depression and hasn’t eaten for days but manages to eat a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, that’s a victory.
- If an elderly person relies on frozen meals or a meal program to stay fed, that’s a lifeline.
The specifics of what someone eats shouldn’t matter as much as the fact that they’re eating.
Reframing How We Think About Food and Nutrition
Too often, people are judged for their food choices: Why did you eat that? Is that all you’re having? But eating is a deeply personal and essential act. For someone facing food insecurity, mental health challenges, or other barriers, just eating is an act of resilience.
Consider this: there are countless reasons why someone’s diet might not fit society’s standards of “healthy.” Food deserts, financial struggles, or even physical or mental health issues can all limit access to fresh or balanced meals. In these cases, food—any food—is survival, and that survival should be celebrated.
Let’s Stop the Judgment
The next time you see someone eating something that doesn’t align with your idea of “healthy” or “appropriate,” remember this: fed is best. Instead of judging, take a moment to appreciate that they are nourishing themselves in the best way they can.
If you’re someone who’s struggling to eat—whether due to mental health, financial difficulties, or other circumstances—know this: you’re doing great; whether it’s a granola bar, a bag of chips, or a frozen dinner, the fact that you’re eating matters.
Everyone Deserves to Eat
Let’s work together to redefine what fed is best means. It’s not just about infants or toddlers—it’s about everyone. Food is a fundamental human need, and nobody should feel ashamed of how or what they eat. So today, if you’ve managed to eat something, no matter how simple or small, I’m proud of you. At the end of the day, fed is best—for everyone.
