4 Reasons You Should Be Open With Your Parents About Sex

Sex. It’s a normal part of life, but we dread talking about it, especially with our parents. Even as adults, sex is often a difficult topic for us. But there are many benefits of talking with your parents about sex, even as an adult. Here are four reasons you should be open with your family about your sex life.

1. You build a more trusting relationship.

When you talk to your parents about sex, they’ll typically appreciate your honesty. You’ll be able to communicate with them openly, so you’ll no longer have to keep secrets. You’ll feel much better about your sex life and your relationship if you’re upfront. And if anything unexpected happens, your parents will understand.

2. You have easier access to protection.

When you’re sexually active, it’s always best to use protection. If you still live with your family and they know that you’re having sex, you might have better access to the protection that you need. You won’t have to worry about the awkward moments that come with purchasing protection, and your parents will be glad that you’re safe, so it’s a win-win for everyone!

3. You have someone you trust to ask for advice.

Your parents know a thing or two about sex, and if you’re losing your virginity as an adult, they might be able to calm your nerves. Although asking your parents for advice might seem awkward, it can be beneficial for you to know what to expect.

4. You have a support system.

Like almost everything else in life, sex comes with risks. You could contract an STD or have an unplanned pregnancy. Therefore, having a support system is extremely important, even as an adult. Your parents can help guide you in the right direction if you end up in a difficult situation.

Sex may feel awkward and uncomfortable to discuss, but even as adults, we benefit from discussing sex with our families. Once you have that first conversation, you can deepen your relationship with your parents and access the support you need.
