10 Odd Jobs You Didn’t Know You Could Have

Have you heard of odd job titles that made you think, “Wait, that exists?” Odd jobs have gained traction over the years, and 2025 is no exception.

Nowadays, not every job looks like an office desk or a stethoscope. Some of us earn a living working from home. And other people get paid to do things you didn’t even know were jobs.

Check out these 10 “odd” jobs you probably didn’t know existed. Who knows? Maybe one of these could be your dream job.

1. Professional Sleeper

Yes, a professional sleeper does exactly what you think they do; they get paid to sleep. Often, hotels and scientists hire people to test the comfort of their beds or run sleep studies.

The tasks include trying various mattresses or sleeping in different lighting conditions. The sleepers must also follow instructions to the letter and provide detailed feedback.

2. Pet Food Taster

While it might not sound like the most glorious job, it’s not as gross as it sounds. Pet food tasters are normally quality control specialists or food scientists. Their job involves checking the texture and nutritional balance of the foods to make sure they meet pet health requirements.

And no, the tasting process isn’t a candlelight dinner. Most of the time, they’ll chew the food to evaluate the texture, then spit it out. It’s more like wine tasting, only for pets.

3. Ethical Hacker

In 2019, Apple promised a $1 million bounty for anyone who could hack its iPhone. That’s the life of an ethical hacker, also known as a “white-hat” hacker. They find weaknesses in a company’s cybersecurity before the bad guys (the “black hats”) do.

It involves a lot of work, but worth it when you tell people, “‘I hack for a living”’ and watch their mouths drop.

4. Iceberg Mover

One thing we could learn from The Titanic, apart from DiCaprio not aging, is that icebergs can be catastrophic. Thus, iceberg movers play an important role in preventing giant chunks of ice from causing disaster.

They tow the icebergs with boats and then nudge them using specialized equipment to change their drift.

If you love the cold and massive icebergs don’t scare you, this could easily be for you.

5. LEGO Builder

That time you spend building Lego with your kid? You could get paid for it. Professional LEGO builders construct massive, jaw-dropping LEGO creations for theme parks and exhibitions.

Some of these creations include replicas of cars and life-sized dragons. I can only imagine the amount of planning and the number of bricks that go into each project.

6. Bed Warmer

Yes, you can get a job as a bed warmer. Luxury hotels will, at times, hire people to slip into the beds before guests arrive. This way, they can warm up the bed so that, when the guests check in, the bed already has the perfect temperature.

7. Golf Ball Diver

You’ve likely watched a golfer slice a shot into the water and thought, “Welp, that’s gone forever.”

Not really; golf courses hire people to fish them out later. Golf ball divers will suit up in scuba gear and retrieve thousands of lost balls from ponds and lakes. Then, someone cleans and resells the balls.

8. Dog Surfing Instructor

If properly trained, dogs can surf. And people have made a living teaching them how to. Dog surfing instructors work with pups and their owners to get them comfortable on a board and guide them into the waves.

It’s nearly impossible to convince a golden retriever that the board isn’t a chew toy, but it’s wholesome seeing them paddle away into the shore.

9. Line Stander

We all know that queueing, or standing in line, is a social etiquette everyone has to adhere to. But not everyone has the time or patience for it. Professional line standers will hold a spot for you in the line for a fee.

If you are patient and have a good playlist, you might help someone score the latest iPhone.

10. Luxury House Sitter

A house sitter keeps a property safe and cared for while the owners are away. You get to live in stunning mansions, with giant-sized pools and wine cellars, and get paid for it.

The challenge is resisting the urge to host “just one” party for your friends.

Out of the Ordinary

When you thought the world couldn’t get any weirder, you learn of such jobs. So, the next time you find yourself bored with your “normal” work, remember, your dream job might be out there, waiting in the strangest of places.
