The unfair treatment of Black mothers in America is nothing new. However, lately, it has gotten worse and worse. No one should have to experience it while bringing their brand-new children into the world.
In the last few weeks, 2 Black mothers – one from Texas, the other from Indiana – experienced horrific experiences at the hospital while in active labor. They desperately asked and looked for care to ensure their safety, as well as the babies’.
We need to reevaluate this problematic issue, pull it apart, and fix it.
With our hospitals and medical system as a whole, it’s damn past time we address this issue. We can’t have this cycle keep happening to millions of Black mothers (which also extends to other mothers of color).
As far as race playing a part in this, it absolutely does. As you can see, the evidence is there. I don’t want to call this out, but I have to. If people see a problem with that, they’re obviously not part of the solution but part of this problem.
This issue doesn’t just affect soon-to-be mothers; it affects everyone involved. When something like this happens, it affects the mother and child first and foremost. But it also affects the hospital where it happened. The hospital’s reputation is now at stake. Now, people lose faith in this hospital and don’t want to have their babies there.
Future generations of women – especially young Black women and women of color- are too scared to have children because of this.
These mothers-to-be have heard countless horror stories about women’s experiences when it comes to giving birth when you look the way you do in America.
I am not going to lie; I don’t blame them. Do you? After all, they’ve seen other women go through the pain and trauma of everything that has happened, all that millions of women have experienced for decades, and don’t want to go through that themselves.
It makes me so mad, and it’s so disheartening on so many levels. It shouldn’t and doesn’t have to be this way.
You might be wondering and asking yourselves, “How do you know that?” I know because this issue rarely happens to white mothers. If it did, there would be a bigger uproar, people making change instantly if it doesn’t happen over time.
Does change need to happen regarding this issue? Hell yes. Will it? Probably not. Doing that requires systemic change and overhaul of practices in our medical system, which we are clearly not ready to face in 2025.
So, what can we do in the meantime?
Doctors and hospital staff, if you see a Black mom, a mom of color in active labor, or one who tells you something’s wrong, believe them. Do your job and protect them; do no harm. By not acting right away, you’re causing damage to them and the baby.
To the rest of society, we need to especially support these mamas and those who advocate for them. Keep speaking up and spreading awareness about this issue. Everyone, regardless of race, class, religion, or other identity, deserves the same health care when bringing new life into the world.
