How The Special Needs Community Shaped Me

I’ve grown up with an older autistic brother. Since I was born, it has been my reality—I’ve never known anything else. The special needs community shaped how I see the world and the people in it. My brother has been my greatest teacher in ways I can’t fully explain. His presence constantly reminds me that everyone deserves love, understanding, and respect.

As I got older, I became an advocate—not just for my brother but also for others in the special needs community. I never planned to become an advocate; it just felt like my responsibility. When you love someone like I love my brother, you’d do anything for that person. It sparks something inside you. You want to be the person who makes a difference, speaks up, and creates a space where everyone feels seen and heard.

My brother inspired me to become a teacher.

I wanted to be in a position to help others the way he helped me grow. That passion led me to earn a master’s degree in early childhood and special education. More than that, it made me realize the power of human connection and how being open, authentic, and compassionate can bridge gaps in understanding.

Thanks to my brother, I’ve had the privilege of meeting incredible individuals who have become an integral part of my life. The relationships I’ve formed with them have been some of the most profound and authentic connections I’ve ever experienced. A silent understanding blossoms when people acknowledge love when it’s given in a way that’s genuine and tailored to their needs. I’ve learned that love isn’t something that can be forced. It’s about being present, being true to yourself, and offering support without expecting anything in return.

Since then, I’ve approached everyone with the same mindset.

I believe in treating people with kindness and respect, without judgment, and offering the same care I’d want for myself. That’s how I’ve built relationships, especially in this community. It’s why so many people feel safe being themselves around me. It’s not about being perfect—it’s about being real and understanding that everyone has their own journey.

During a recent conversation with my mom, she said, “You excel in what you do because you put your heart into it, and you’re always true to yourself.” Her words resonated with me, reinforcing the belief that authenticity is the key. When you show up as your true self, trust is built, and the relationships that form are some of the most genuine you’ll ever experience.

My journey in the special needs community has been a profound learning experience—not just as an advocate or a teacher, but as a human being. I’ve learned that everyone has something unique to offer. The more open you are to understanding them, the more you receive in return. The relationships I’ve cultivated have played a significant role in shaping who I am today. I’m not just a teacher or an advocate—I’m someone who has evolved through these connections.

Being involved in this community isn’t just something I do—it’s who I am. It’s shaped me in unexpected ways and continues to teach me that when we show up as our authentic selves, we create space for others to do the same. That’s the true power of connection: When we embrace who we are, we inspire others to do the same.
