ICYMI: The 2018 Academy Award Nominations Are Finally Out

The Oscar nominations for the 90th annual awards were announced on Tuesday morning by the Academy President, John Bailey, who was also joined by Tiffany Haddish and Andy Serkis. The trio announced the nominees in 24 categories from the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills, California.

“The Shape of Water” received the most nominations with a total of 13. “Dunkirk” received eight nominations and “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” received seven nominations, making these two movies solid contenders against “The Shape of Water”.

Despite these amazing films being nominated in various categories, many people are upset about Wonder Woman not making the list of nominees.

Warner Bros. submitted the widely popular film for 15 categories, including:Cinematography, Production Design, Costume Design, Visual Effects, Makeup and Hair, Original Score and the Best Director category for Patty Jenkins. Despite Warner Bros. effort, “Wonder Woman” will receive no recognition at this years Academy Awards.

Because of this snub, “Suicide Squad” keeps its place as the only film in the DC Cinematic Universe to be nominated for or to win an Oscar.

Greta Gerwig became the 5th woman in Academy Award history to be nominated for Best Director for her film “Lady Bird”. If she wins, she will be the second female ever to win the award.

Many people are taking to social media to express their excitement for Gerwig’s nomination.

The four previous females to be nominated as Best Director were Lina Wertmuller in 1977, Jane Campion in 1994, Sofia Coppola in 2004, and Kathryn Bigelow in 2010. Bigelow was the first woman in history to win the Oscar for Best Director. She won the award because of her work on “The Hurt Locker”.

“Ladybird” also took home 5 nominations in various categories: Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, Best Actress (for Saoirse Ronan) and Best Supporting Actress (for Laurie Metcalf).
