I’ll be honest, I don’t know that I necessarily buy into the idea of the herbs helping with the things it claims to (such as healing ailments and preventing diseases) but I’ll tell you this much: I can understand why people enjoy them.

I got a little adventurous and decided to give it a try. I was going through some health issues after stopping birth control and wanting to regulate my cycles naturally. In my research, I came across several articles about V-Steams healing this. The herbs I used didn’t do what they were supposed to. However, I wasn’t disappointed because it was extremely relaxing and I would totally do it again if I have the patience to stay still long enough.

What is it?

Well, it’s a steaming of your crotch. In most spas they’ll have special seats that are kind of like toilets bowls that you can sit on during the process. They wrap a towel around to cover you up and keep the heat in. Basically the idea is that it detoxes and soothes. There are also claims that depending on the herbs used, you can actually increase your libido. However, if nothing else, it is really relaxing.

Why the herbs?

Different herbs can be added to the steaming water for different benefits.

Some examples:

Lavender is said to relax your mind and body as well as work as an antiseptic to your tissues. It also supposed to aid the healthy function of your uterus.

Oregano is supposed to bring on your period and prevent infections.

Basil reduces menstrual pain and also brings on menstruation.

Rose Petals are another relaxing and uplifting herb.

There are many other herbs with a variety of uses. If you go to a spa, the specialists there should be able to help you select herbs for your v-steam.

DIY?

That’s right ladies, you can do this yourself. However, be aware there are hazards…such as burns. So when I say you can DIY, I also must say you DAYOR (do at your own risk). It’s pretty simple.

You will need:
1. A gallon of boiled water.
2. Herbs of your choice. (a cup of dry or a quart of fresh ones)
3. A slated chair (or one with an open middle)
4. A blanket.
5. A bowl
6. An adventurous attitude.

Steps:
1. Boil the water and mix the herbs. Allow it to boil for 10 minutes, remove from heat, then allow to sit for about 5 minutes.
2. Transfer to your bowl and place it under your slated or open middle chair.
3. TEST THE WATER, DO NOT GET BURNED.
4. Sit down (a la nude) and wrap your blanket around you (cover your entire lower half all the way to the ground to keep the heat in, like a tent).

You can steam for 20-30 minutes, then it’s best to go to bed for at least an hour.

I’ve got to say, it’s pretty awkward and time-consuming so probably not for everyone. However, if you can find the time and ability to sit still and do it, it is extremely relaxing and definitely worthwhile. Give it a try if you dare and share your experiences in the comments!
