I always considered my kitchen as another room, a dark, cluttered area, in which I hurried in the morning and avoided spending evenings lurking there. It was convenient, that was all. However, when I eventually chose to begin my kitchen renovation in Manhattan last year, I was not aware that I would not only transform the room, but my whole pattern of living.
What began as some simple refinements evolved into one great affair with the contemporary kitchen design, intelligent technology, and eco-friendliness. I can still recall the feeling of being in the center of the mess, dust filling the air, partially damaged cabinets, and a combination of fear and adrenaline. I kept on asking myself, Will this be worth it? It happens to be the case that it was.
The initial giant move was to adopt intelligent kitchen technology. I could not dream of talking to my oven, and now it seems to be a natural thing. My fridge kindly reminds me that I am out of milk, and my voice-activated tap makes it easy to do things. My lighting system is even automated during the day; it is bright and spirited in the morning but soft and warm at night. Now my kitchen even has its own personality; it silently assists me throughout the day.
Another option that changed my perception of what my home is like was going green. I changed the countertops that I had before with new ones built using sustainable materials such as recycled glass and reclaimed wood. Whenever I touch my hand across the grain, I do feel that I have taken a bit of history and nature inside. Not only design, but a tiny little cue that reminds us every day that responsibility and beauty can not only coexist, but they can even be the same.
Among the most vivid changes I had to make in my kitchen remodeling was the opening of space. Having knocked the wall separating my kitchen and living area down, everything was different. And suddenly, I was able to talk with my family and cook or have a glass of wine with friends, and did not feel isolated. Our kitchen was the actual center of the house – noisy, warm-blooded, and alive.
Some other stuff that surprised me was a minimalist kitchen design. I got used to minimalism being chilly and dull; however, when I cleared my counters and replaced my handleless cabinets with smooth ones, I realized how relaxing it is to have fewer things cluttered. The space is serene with the clean lines and a set of neutral tones that remind me of taking a breath of fresh air whenever I enter the space.
The island is my personal favorite, however. It is where I cut vegetables, attend Zoom, and even have late-night tea scrolling through old photos. I had installed in-built storage and concealed sockets, which made it the best and most favorite aspect of my home.
When I walk into my kitchen, it not only appears new to me today but is a different version of me. Even the eco-friendly design solutions and the personalized lighting have a narrative about how I have learned to be more conscious of my life. The idea behind renovating my kitchen was not only to make it beautiful; it was to find the home comfort, connection, and happiness in daily routines.
