I frequent book-centered social media, including the infamous BookTok, and one of the main things creators like to do on there (to sell books they’ve written or talk about ones they’ve read) is to categorize them by trope. A “trope” can mean a few different things, but in this context, it means some kind of storytelling device, event, or character that comes up often in stories.
However, since we humans love categorizing things, people most of all, I’ve seen netizens try psychoanalyzing people based on their favorite tropes (and thoroughly roasting them).
So, according to the expert advice of strangers on the internet, here’s what your favorite book trope says about you. (Warning for a lot of insults and sarcasm.)
Dark Academia
You like learning for its own sake, but you also don’t hate the elitism or the impressed looks people give you when you’re “disgustingly overeducated.” You love winter, because it allows you to wear dark long jackets and cardigans without dying, and “The Tortured Poets Department.” Maybe you’re trying to become a psychopath.
Enemies-to-Lovers
You long to fall in love with someone who can see the worst parts of you and wants you anyway. Maybe you’ve done something bad yourself, but more likely, you’re a people pleaser, or told you were too much. Or you just find evil people hot. Either way, you probably wouldn’t be good at the “enemy” part if you were in the main character’s shoes.
Soulmates
You are so insecure about your own ability to forge a relationship that you long for some cosmic force in the universe to bind you to someone for eternity. You’re also possessive and get jealous very easily. And you either really love or really hate the idea of “worshipping” a lover.
Friends-to-Lovers
You’re terrified of being lied to, or falling in love with “the idea of” someone, that you yearn for what would likely be an awkward and agonizing real-life experience. You also really like the idea of your relationships being healthy and innocent. This is all because you have major trust issues.
Right Person, Wrong Time
You like feeling sad, and, in relationships, you may avoid or hesitate to give affection if you don’t feel like everything lines up right. Some people suggest that you are entirely wrong, as the “right person” can’t be at the “wrong time.” In my opinion, you’re probably the most practical person on this list, but it’s a low bar.
Found Family
Either you feel the need to take care of the people around you just to feel important, or you grew up feeling like an outcast (especially in your own family) and love the idea of being loved unconditionally by a group. (Honestly, fair.) Also, you have a 99% chance of being from the LGBTQ+ community.
Hurt/Comfort
You desperately yearn for comfort or softness, but feel like you don’t deserve it. You had a time of need where you wished someone could have been there, but wasn’t, or made you feel like a burden. Ultimately, you want to believe that every bad experience will have a happy ending.
Corruption Arc
Much like your enemies-to-lovers companion, you are a people pleaser. You have been wronged many times in your life, and you could never quite stand up to the people who wronged you. In your process of “living for yourself,” you’ve started deciding you’ll have fun in life, and your idea of “fun” is watching people lose themselves to their darkest impulses.
Redemption Arc
You frequently feel misunderstood and wish someone would look past the image you give off to understand why you are this way. Or you just find men with jet-black or white-blonde hair and blue eyes hot, so you’ll forgive them for anything.
Cannibalism
You’re obsessive and desperate for connection, and you wish someone else could be just as obsessive and desperate as you. You try to believe you are dark and edgy for this.
