How To Navigate College As A First-Generation Student

college

As a first-generation college student, college life can feel confusing and overwhelming.

It’s harder to navigate university life when you’re the first in your family to enter higher education, and your family doesn’t know exactly how to help. The good news is that when you take advantage of the resources that your school offers, you can more easily feel at home in college.

I’m a first-generation college student, and I put a lot of pressure on myself to make my parents proud. I took the opportunity to go to college because my parents never had the chance to go, so I felt like attending college was even more important.

My parents didn’t know how to help me, so I had to figure out college life on my own.

It’s important to become comfortable with reaching out to all available resources at your school. Meeting with academic counselors to plan for your future can relieve stress. They can’t decide how your future will play out, but they can help you set up the future that you want. Different departments can help with various parts of college, like finding internships, joining extracurricular activities, and even searching for jobs.

Getting to know your professors will also take you far. Not every professor is the same, and you won’t love every professor that you have, but connecting with them will help you grow. Stay present in class — actively listen, regularly participate, and take thorough notes to make the most of your education.

Connecting with your classmates is just as important.

Learn about what they study and how their degree programs run. Let them share their knowledge with you, and don’t be afraid to admit that you need their help. Ask them about the opportunities that they’ve found, especially if they’re also first-generation. Networking with your classmates will help you make both personal and professional connections that will help you in the future.

Learn to treat yourself kindly and take regular breaks. When your classes become difficult, know that it’s OK to go out and have fun to distract yourself. It’s healthy to get out and have fun. That may look like getting dressed up and going out for drinks with your friends or going on a hike to watch the sunrise. Just know when it’s time to lock back in and focus on your work.

Being a first-generation college student can feel daunting, but you can thrive. Know that there are on-campus resources to help you, and be mindful of your mental health, and you’ll have an amazing college experience.
