How To Make Your Room More Aesthetic

Your room is a special place. It’s where you feel safe, nurtured, and at home. And why? Because everywhere you look, you see reflections of what you like and what matters to you. When I first realized how important my room was to me, I was just a kid. But since that epiphany, I have infused the very walls with what I dig most.

And you should too. It’s your space, so it’s all about you. Bring it to life with these tips to make your room aesthetic, following the aesthetic trend in fashion and interior decor. I love this trend and I’ll explain why, below!

What Is Aesthetic Decor?

Aesthetic decor is a contemporary design trend that is very much driven by individualism. As an enthusiastic fan of maximalism, I can see aesthetic decor as an offshoot. You could call the aesthetic style a branch of the maximalist tree, with DNA from both bohemian and biophilic decor tendencies revealing themselves.

My introverted, romantic side loves this style and its appeal to the past. Weaving in other contemporary trends, many plants, and delicious textures, aesthetic decor doesn’t demand a stylistic commitment. The freedom of that appeals to me! Bringing who I am to my personal space with decor that’s liberated from rules is my idea of joy. You’ll find bales of it in aesthetic decor!

Little Big Aesthetic Touches

Color is a big part of the aesthetic trend, with subtle shades of pink and neutral beiges favored for a pastel palette that calms. Texture is added to flocked bedspreads, macramé wall hangings, and other artisan touches a la the 1970s.

Styles from the 1970s are having a moment, so if that’s your jam, play with it. Try something funky, like a holographic rainbow suncatcher decal, to paint your room’s walls with colored light. Or add pink to furniture pieces, pillows, and bedding. I had some friends help me tack up meters of baby pink silk fabric from a thrift shop for a unique, luxe ceiling look. It adds a hint of dramatic flair that’s part of who I am.

I like a mood with my drama, so candles are an absolute must. And when the day is done and I’m curled up under my fluffy pink canopy of silk, flickering candles are so goth dramatic. This tip lets you change the look of your room at will with lamp and plant placement.

Artfully Aesthetic

Art and your preferences about it are deeply personal. I favor a fruity mix of folkloric and modern art. You may like velvet paintings or Banksy prints. But a cohesive display is a uniquely aesthetic art project, so keep to a theme or group different themes together. Think carefully about why you love the art, then display it as it deserves to be displayed.

If you’re thin on art for the moment, try one of the hallmarks of aesthetic decor instead—the wall collage. Create this from photos torn from magazines that inspire you. Try to create harmony between the three dominant colors, then attach your tear sheets to the wall inside a large frame or freeform. If you choose freeform, set invisible boundaries, as this creates a more intentional look. Choose a removable tape so you can switch out your tear sheets when the mood strikes.
