6 Tips For A Fun But Unplanned Weekend Getaway

Throughout the summer, we constantly think about traveling to other places. If we live in the countryside, for example, we may find ourselves spending more time in the city. But summer is one of the best seasons to spend time in nature, especially in smaller cities, and go for a fun getaway.

Last Sunday, I wanted to go to Niagara Falls, which is around a three-hour train ride from Toronto.

Although I spent Saturday night and Sunday morning binge-watching K-dramas with my partner, we still decided to take the leap. The train to our destination broke down, so we had to re-plan our trip at the last minute.

We didn’t go to Niagara Falls, but we explored Burlington instead.

We also learned some tips throughout our trip. So if you’re looking for tips for a last-minute weekend getaway, here are six of them:

1. Know your destination well beforehand.

When you decide to go on a last-minute trip, ensure you know your destination beforehand. That way, you can quickly navigate the area and visit the local attractions. This will make you more comfortable knowing your surroundings and navigating emergencies.

2. Expect transit delays.

Train and bus delays do happen occasionally. So learn how to go with the flow. If a train route got canceled, know how to navigate to the same destination using another route. Also, you may need to pivot. If your select destination isn’t available, see if you can visit another destination along the way. You never know what ends up happening.

3. Use Google Maps.

If you end up at an unexpected destination, use Google Maps to navigate the area. When my partner and I traveled to Burlington, we looked for attractions near the train station, which led us to the park.

During your train trip, look for landmarks, historical places, or other attractions within your destination.

4. Pack bug repellent and sunscreen.

When you visit areas near water, expect to deal with mosquitos and heat. Regardless of wherever you go, always bring bug repellent and sunscreen with you. This helps you minimize the chances of bug bites or sunburns.

5. Grab a cold treat.

Whenever I travel to a small town in Ontario, especially in the summer, I always grab a cold dessert like ice cream. They make your day more refreshing and make for a good trip highlight. Besides, who doesn’t like cold treats in the humid summer sun?

6. Bring water.

Regardless of how many drinks you purchase, you’ll always need to stay hydrated throughout the trip. So don’t forget to bring some water bottles. They’ll come in handy in no time.

Going on a last-minute getaway is full of fun and action. You never know what to expect throughout the day, and you’ll visit different landmarks on the go. However, you still need to prepare beforehand by bringing a few items. Above all, remember to have fun! Trips help you discover the world around you, and they’re perfect expeditions to take during the summer.
