3 Simple Steps To Start A Solid Skincare Routine

If you’re interested in starting a skincare routine, you’re probably at a loss as to where to start. With so many cleansers, creams, and serums available, it’s challenging to know what you need. In addition, everyone’s skin is different, and there’s no “one size fits all” product. So, before starting a new regimen, it’s a good idea to talk to a dermatologist or esthetician about what products are best for your unique skin.

Skincare Routine Basics

A solid skincare routine has three parts: cleansing, toning, and moisturizing. All three stages ensure that your skin gets the highest possible benefits from the products. If you’re unsure where to start, check out this Thrive Skin review to better understand the different types of products. Whichever products you end up selecting, you’ll still be following the same basic skincare steps and in the same order.

Step 1: Cleansing

Most people scrub their faces daily in the shower or the bathroom sink. However, depending on your current products, you may be doing more harm than good. First of all, never use any facial cleansers or scrubs with plastic “microbeads” in the ingredients or description. They leave micro-abrasions on your face making your skin susceptible to bacteria and blemishes. Microbeads are also awful for the environment as their components don’t biodegrade. Instead, stick with a gentle cleanser that’s free of dyes and perfumes. Cleanse your face in the morning and again before you go to sleep at night; this will be the first step of your routine.

Step 2: Toning

So, what does a toner do anyway? It’s a follow-up step to your cleansing since it removes any traces of bacteria, excess oil, makeup, or other unfriendly substances your cleanser may have missed. Toning ensures that when you put on your moisturizer (in the next step), your skin is primed and ready to proceed with the rest of your regimen. They do all this without stripping your skin of its own moisturizing properties. Different complexions have different needs. But no matter your skin type, you’re going to want to stay away from toners containing alcohol, witch hazel, or perfumes as they can potentially cause irritation.

Step 3: Moisturizing

Moisturizing is a vital step in any skincare routine. The purpose of a moisturizer is to hydrate your skin by replacing moisture that your skin can’t create on its own. Your moisturizer also creates a protective barrier between your skin and the environment, thus protecting it from outside irritations and environmental pollutants. When choosing a moisturizer, it is essential that you select one that contains an SPF of at least 15. Protecting yourself from UVA and UVB rays is extremely important to the overall health of your skin. It’s also important to look for a moisturizer that states it is “non-comedogenic,” meaning that it doesn’t contain oils that will clog your pores.

At nighttime, swap out your daytime moisturizer containing SPF, and opt for one with hyaluronic acid, which preserves and nourishes your skin while you sleep. Nighttime is also the perfect opportunity to apply a serum containing nourishing ingredients to your skin, giving your night cream an extra boost! Look for a water-based product with vitamin C, which will brighten and even out your complexion during the night.

Sometimes finding the correct products for your unique skin type can be a process of trial and error, but don’t lose hope. Once you find the products suitable for your needs, you will notice positive changes in how your skin looks and feels. Now that you understand the basics, you can create your very own skincare routine!
