The Fashion Formula That Will Make Your Style Look Effortless

fashion formula

Life seems to move at an exponentially fast pace, and most days, I leave the house with a full to-do list. I have long days in the office, catch-up sessions with friends, and errands to run. But with a comfortable outfit and an iced coffee, I feel like I can conquer the world. Here’s the fashion formula I use to look effortlessly chic all day:

Let’s Talk Math

I used to watch Nancy Meyers films and wonder how the characters’ styles looked so flawless. The answer? It wasn’t because they wore specific outfits; it’s because they had a curated style. These women understood the importance of balance in clothing and the formula to achieve it.

Now, I use my own simple formula to make choosing outfits easy each morning. I usually avoid math as much as possible, but I promise that these are formulas that you’ll actually remember.

The Capsule Constant

Everyone knows that before you figure out a formula, you need to understand the variables. So let’s start with the “constant”: the capsule pieces

A capsule wardrobe consists of pieces that you can wear in many ways. These pieces can fit into your wardrobe any time of year. Your capsule pieces should be versatile for sudden weather changes, especially if you live in a region where the weather drastically shifts throughout the day.

The Summer Sweetie Solution

Putting together a cute outfit on a hot summer day is definitely possible. One of my favorite all-day summer outfit formulas is to start with an oversized, breathable button-down shirt.

Then, I add a pair of cute bottoms in either linen, denim, or cotton.  I finish the equation with a pair of strappy sandals. With this formula, you can create a sweet summer outfit that never fails.

The Classic Coefficient

On days when I know that I’ll move frequently, I prefer a “classic outfit” formula. Finding a way to look balanced in the midst of daily chaos is a moment of perfect geometry.

For your own “golden triangle” moment, start with a pair of jeans (I opt for high-waisted jeans, but choose what’s comfortable for you!), and pull them on over a fitted tank or bodysuit.

When it’s cold, this is an easy outfit to layer with a bomber jacket for a nostalgic look or a blazer for the office. The jacket elevates the jeans and fitted tank, but the outfit looks effortless.

Sometimes, I switch up this outfit, using the same base formula but substituting the high-waisted jeans for skinny jeans and the fitted top for a flowy one, adding ballet flats to complete the look. It’s the same balanced concept — just lighter.

The Elevated Casual Theorem

On days when the sun is shining and the temperature feels perfect, I want to wear a dress. I start with a maxi dress because it allows for maximum movement. Then, I add white tennis shoes for a bit of comfort. Top off this outfit with a cardigan or a blue jean jacket.

The Effortlessly Chic Ratio

I never feel more chic than when I wear linen pants. This breathable fabric is ideal for warmer months. Achieve a balanced look when you pair the pants with a fitted tee and sandals.

Linen pants are also flowy enough to pair with a chunky knit sweater for cooler nights or a linen button-up for a more ethereal look.

The Monochromatic Multiplier

Wearing a single shade is a mathematical magic trick that makes you look like you’re wearing multiple shades. If you go monochromatic, start with high-waisted trousers or slacks for a flattering silhouette.

Then, add in a fitted shirt or an oversized sweatshirt, and finish off the tailored look with the classic “millennial tuck.”

Even if you see fashion as “art” rather than “science,” logic can make every outfit look put together. The trick is to understand how the sum of each part creates the look. When you use my formulas, you’ll find a solution to your wardrobe problem that’s so effortless that you’ll always have the perfect outfit.
