Why We Need Positive Media Representation Of People Of Color

media representation

As a sociology major, I see social issues in an analytical way. This extends to media representation — I always notice how inaccurately minority groups are represented in shows and movies.

The lack of accurate media representation for marginalized ethnic groups makes it difficult for others to understand cultures that are different from their own. When actors of color do have lead roles, their storylines are full of stereotypical tropes.

Therefore, it’s difficult to find media content that resonates with people of color.

The media prioritizes content that “sells” over content that minority groups can truly connect with. That’s why content that entertains at the expense of minority groups takes precedence.

In the past, media content has forced characters of color to fade into the background to give white characters the spotlight. This focus often resulted in characters of color losing depth because they existed as little more than old stereotypes. No one voiced concern about the damaging effects of inaccurate media representation for people of color, and minority groups couldn’t feel represented on-screen.

It was a lose-lose situation at the expense of people of color.

Even today, we need to remember that people of color are more than background characters; they have rich stories to tell. But still, this necessary perspective falls through the cracks. People of color still don’t have the same amount of accurate, positive media representation that white people do — we don’t see them as protagonists, pursuing education or climbing the corporate ladder. Consequently, audiences miss the opportunity to feel seen in multidimensional characters and understand cultures other than their own.

Creating accurate media representation for people of color is easier said than done, but the media is slowly catching up. Shows like “Never Have I Ever” and “Abbott Elementary” portray people of color as ambitious individuals successfully working towards their personal and professional goals.

Proper representation makes people feel seen, fostering greater confidence in their minority identities.

Authentic media representation for people of color makes all the difference for everyone who sees it. Everyone wants others to see them for who they are, including their minority identities. Therefore, creators should make media that resonates with a variety of minority groups on a deeper level. Accurate representation is the bare minimum, and it provides long-overdue representation for people of color.

Imagine how children will feel when they discover successful characters who look like them. When they focus on writing multidimensional characters from a variety of racial and ethnic backgrounds, writers and creators can make this powerful vision a reality.
