A Poem For Those Who Long To Live In A Big City

I wrote a poem titled “Collage” about spending my early childhood years in a city and then moving to a small town in the middle of nowhere. Over time, I no longer wanted to return to where I used to live, but I still longed for the feeling of living in a big city, imagining my future and making vision boards of what I want my life to look like. If you also long to go somewhere or be something, then you will definitely relate to this poem.

Collage

Music, constant noise
the moon reflecting against the asphalt
putrid smells bringing on a wrinkled nose—
this was the chaotic city
I remember almost every day

Then there’s no more music
only dirt roads, cornfields, and coyotes
nothing to do
nowhere to go
nothing to see
I found myself looking for anything
to occupy my mind
creating fictional stories to live in while I sleep

I search as far as my imagination will take me
but I have yet to find it

relaying images and scenes
making cutouts of my favorite places

with a playlist made, itinerary planned
I still don’t know
where I’ll go from here.

It’s so clear that hope
ff wanting something more.
The life I wanted then isn’t what I have now.

It’s very different from before.

No one will know how long I’ve wished
for a future that seems unattainable
and how hard it has been
to hold onto the future, I made cutouts of

When I look at city lights
I remind myself
“Someday, I’ll reach it,
I’ll get what I always wanted,
yet never thought
was possible.”

Everyone has hopes and dreams, no matter how small. As you read this poem, I hope you can relate to the story and remember to keep going so you can live the life you’ve always wanted. Hurdles are a part of the journey, so look past them and don’t let them stop you.
