When I made my choice to study abroad, friends questioned my decision. They suggested that it might be too expensive, too difficult, and far from home. For me, this was a decision I chose to make — a choice meant to invest in myself and my future life.
Sure, it cost a lot of money to pay for a university education in another country, and I forfeited my leisure time to study and work at a part-time job just to pay my tuition and living expenses. In retrospect, I can say responsibly and confidently that it was one of the best decisions in my life.
Going to Study Abroad — A Decision
To be clear, studying abroad was not by happenstance. I had chosen to study abroad with acknowledgment, from one perspective and another, in conversation.
I was seeking an education and experience that could offer more than simply knowledge, that could broaden my worldview and transform me in the process. I was seeking a stimulating environment to both academically and personally develop, to meet students from around the world, and to experience a genuinely internationalized mode of learning.
From the first moment I landed in another country, I realized I was in a whole new world — a whole new world of opportunity.
Mixing Study and Work
In order to realize my dream, I worked throughout my university studies. Juggling lectures, assignments, and part-time jobs was challenging but provided me with invaluable lessons in discipline, time management, and responsibility. More importantly, every hour spent working only further emphasized my appreciation of the education I was undertaking. Moreover, these experiences helped me bridge the equity gap during my studies and allowed me to develop and dust off skills that I still rely on today. Skills like teamwork, communication and resilience. It was not simply a means to earn an income. It was framed in a way that helped me gain my ability to stand on my own two feet.

Upon reflection, every dollar spent and every hour of labour has recouped dividends immeasurable.

The time I spent studying abroad gave me something that money cannot buy, which is confidence, perspective, and freedom.
All the late nights studying, working shifts, and overcoming obstacles have molded me into the person I am today. That’s why I can honestly say: paying for my college education abroad was worth every penny.
