We were raised on the idea that homeownership is the ultimate marker of adulthood. But let’s be real: that version of the American Dream was built for a different time and a very different economy.
Millennials are the most educated generation in U.S. history—and the most debt-burdened. Add in wage stagnation, rising housing costs, inflation, and a job market that often demands flexibility, and it’s no surprise that our generation is buying homes later than ever (if at all).
For women, the gap can be even greater. We earn less on average, spend more time caregiving, and face systemic barriers to financial stability. If you’re a single woman or a queer woman like me, the path to homeownership is even murkier.
And yet, despite the challenges, we’re constantly bombarded with messages that suggest we’re somehow less successful if we haven’t bought property by 30.
Renting as a Lifestyle—Not a Last Resort
Here’s a radical thought: what if renting isn’t something we “settle” for, but something we choose?
Renting offers freedom. Flexibility. The ability to change jobs or cities without worrying about selling a house. Fewer upfront costs. No surprise roof repairs or broken furnaces. And sometimes, more access to amenities like pools, gyms, and on-site maintenance.
For women in our 20s, 30s, and 40s who are building careers, navigating complex relationships, or raising children on our own, renting can be a way to reclaim control over our lives. It lets us invest in ourselves, rather than locking all our money into a mortgage we may not even want.
Good Property Management Makes All the Difference
That said, not all rentals are created equal. A poorly managed property can turn renting into a nightmare, while a well-managed one can make it feel like home.
If you’ve ever waited weeks for a broken AC to be fixed or had your maintenance requests ignored, you know exactly what I mean. That’s why finding the right property—and the right management team—matters.
Whether you’re in New York, LA, or looking for an apartment property management company in Houston, having a trustworthy team behind your rental can make all the difference. It’s not just about paying rent on time—it’s about feeling safe, respected, and cared for in the place you call home.
Buying Isn’t Off the Table—But It’s Not the Only Goal
Let’s be clear: there’s nothing wrong with wanting to buy a home. Maybe that’s your dream. Maybe it’s on your five-year plan. Maybe you’re already scrolling Zillow listings with your partner on the couch every night. That’s great.
But for those of us who aren’t there yet—or may never want to be—renting doesn’t have to feel like second-best. We don’t owe anyone an explanation for prioritizing what works best for us right now.
Because at the end of the day, home is about more than equity. It’s about comfort. Safety. Autonomy.
And that doesn’t require a mortgage.
