What I Want My Future Niece Or Nephew To Know

So, I know that you aren’t even born yet but I have so many things I want to tell you already.

See, I don’t really care if you’re a girl or a boy, I know society makes it seem like I should want my sister to bring in one or the other, but really, all I care about is your existence in this world.

I know I’m supposed to only be happy as long as “you’re healthy” but truthfully, I would love you no matter what. No matter the illness, no matter the disability, no matter what life throws our way when you enter the world, I’ll be here for you through it all.

When you’re first born I will rock you in my arms and hold you as gently as I can. I will be in shock at your existence in this world but I am going to be so happy to meet you; to look at you in the face, to hold your hands, to touch your cheeks and kiss your face.

When you’re a toddler I will be sure to keep an eye on you.
I will sing songs to you that your mother and I would sing together when we were young.
I will chase you around the house while your father is cooking and we will scream at the top of our lungs just like when your mother and I did.

When you start school, I will pick you up the coolest little outfits and backpacks to ensure you have a great start to your years at school. I will hang up your pieces of artwork on my fridge at home and tell the people who come to my house how proud I am of you. I will post your school photos on my desk at work so I can be reminded of your sweet face in the moments of stress that my life will certainly become.

When you start to become a teenager trying to figure out your place in the world, I’ll try my best to guide you. I’ll try my best to be open and honest with you about all the questions that you are too afraid to ask your parents, ill answer. I will make sure you are safe and happy in the world because I know as a teenager it is so fucking hard sometimes. I know some days you will feel really lonely and like the world is really hard but just remember that what you are experiencing doesn’t define you and it won’t matter in a few years.

When you’re a young adult, I’ll make sure that you explore the world around you. I will bring you to places and show you experiences that will shape you into becoming a, hopefully, happy person. I know that you think you have it together, but trust me, your still young and have a lot of life to live.

Please remember to never settle because you think you’re not good enough or won’t find someone else or your ideas won’t matter. Because trust me when I tell you, you matter more than you realize. You matter so much to so many people.

Now I don’t know where I will be when you are an adult or where you will be when you become a mother or father for the first time. But I know that for as long as you are in my life, I will support you, I will love you and I will do anything I can to protect you to make sure you live a happy life.

That’s really all that matters in this life, is to be happy.

Above all else, I want you to know that I will always be here for you, no matter what your age, no matter where I am in the world. I will always be here for you.
