7 Ways To Cut Back On Your Phone Usage

Last week, an 80-year-old lady told me Generation Y is lucky to be growing up in a world with technology. I disagreed and had a nice conversation with her about it. I told her I wish I grew up in her generation where technology wasn’t around. These days, two-year-olds have iPads, kids in elementary school have cell phones, and people go for walks with their headphones in. We are living our life through technology, and I personally hate it.

I decided to put a list together so you can scale back your cell phone use, and stop being glued to it!

  1. Cancel your data.

If you cancel your data you will only be able to use Wifi. This will stop you from going on your phone to check your social media when you’re out and about with friends and family or even just yourself.

  1. Delete your social media apps.

If you have the Facebook app you probably click on it every 20-or-so minutes. If you delete it, you’ll physically have to type it in on the web and login to check the website.

  1. Airplane mode is your friend.

Sometimes you don’t want to leave your phone behind for safety reasons. If you go for a walk, eat a meal, or with friends, turn your phone on airplane mode. This is great because you can still have it on you, but you won’t feel obligated to check your phone.

  1. Turn off your notifications.

So, you are getting likes on an Instagram picture you just posted? SOS better check ASAP. No. You honestly don’t need to see right away. What’s the point? What are you getting from it? Turn off your notifications so you’ll check on your own time instead of doing it just because you got a photo like or comment.

  1. Take a break.

Set a timeframe during the day, or a weekend, or a full day, where you don’t use your phone. It may be hard at first, but keep doing it. Your mind will eventually unlearn your phone addiction.

  1. Put your phone on silent.

If you truly want to stop using your phone so much, put your phone on silent when you’re eating. Keep it in your pocket until you are done. Take in the people around you instead of being glued to your screen.

  1. Track the amount of time you spend on your phone.

Funny, but there are apps you can download that tracks the amount of time you spend on your phone. There’s an app called Moment that you can set daily limits on yourself. It acts as a coach to help you use your phone less!

I challenge you to at least try to not use your phone so much. If your nose is glued to the screen, you’re missing out on small moments, building relationships, and socializing! Phones are great, but we shouldn’t be on them as much as we are.
