How I Took My Life Back After A Traumatic Dog Attack

On my 15th birthday, my true best friend arrived in my suburban Chicago home: Rascal, a fuzzy Border Collie puppy with bright blue eyes. I fell in love so hard that I crash-landed at a Chicago university, planning for a career in veterinary medicine so I could help other dogs.

Everything changed when I was jogging along the Lakefront Trail on a foggy spring morning. Zoned out and listening to my favorite songs, I didn’t have time to react before the dog charged. He clamped down on my leg like a shark and stayed gripped even as I screamed and kicked.

The owner was nowhere to be seen; an older gentleman was the only one who came to my rescue. The Animal Control officers above me blurred into one another and then disappeared as I fell asleep.

The First Step

As soon as she was able, my mom spirited me back to the suburbs for recuperation. I was surrounded by the comforting scent of her home-cooked chili and swamped in homemade blankets.

Rascal lay at my feet, day after day; his big brown eyes tracked my every move, as if checking that I didn’t blame him for another dog’s actions. With him and therapy, I was able to recall the special bond I’ve shared with animals my whole life.

But something else still frightened me: the medical bills. The time out of school. Losing my part-time job. Having to pay back my scholarships. These anxieties looped in my head as I cuddled up in my childhood bedroom, listening to Rascal’s soft snores.

Building My Support Team

It was then that my mom suggested I consult with Chicago dog bite injury lawyers. From the first call, I felt heard, supported, and reassured. They tracked down the owner and opened a claim with the owner’s insurance, managing all the research and documentation on my behalf.

I was deeply grateful that I didn’t have to face the owner; the law firm handled all these communications. The insurance claim hummed in the background as I focused on hobbling into my classes on crutches or tentatively approaching my best friend’s dog. Immersing myself in my studies reconnected me with the wonders of biology and helped me regain my compassion for all animals, including the one that hurt me.

Speaking Up for Others

As my legal case moved forward, I learned that every year, 334,000 people visit U.S. emergency rooms for dog bites, with an additional 466,000 seen in other medical settings. I also learned that runners are a common target for stray dogs, especially those with a high prey drive or who feel their property is threatened.

The settlement came in, the agreement was signed–all without me having to face the man whose dog changed my life. It was then that I felt free to speak, knowing that my story could be a powerful tool when paired with research.

Some dog owners were defensive, claiming that my trauma was making me lash out. That’s when I turned to Rascal, my best friend–and now my partner in change. I started posting videos showing off simple techniques to protect both dogs and people, with Rascal happily trotting by my side; I showed how to place a muzzle, how to check fencing, and how to safely introduce your dog to strangers.

Suddenly, the comments were pouring in. Other dog-attack victims praised me for my compassionate yet factual approach; dog owners thanked me for educating them on how to keep their beloved pets from becoming aggressive. Parents especially took my advice to heart, especially when I mentioned that most victims are children.

Healing With Heart

As I look back on the experience, I realized that most dog owners simply never think their animal could be dangerous. They love their animals so much that they think only the best of them and can’t imagine they could cause any harm.

But love shouldn’t blind us to consequences, only help us approach them with greater care. I hope that every dog owner will see good training and dog-bite prevention not as punishment, but as protection: both for others and for their furry best friend.
