Recently, I found myself in a situation that spiraled out of control because of a miscommunication. I was supposed to be somewhere at a specific time, but the details got tangled up between my friend and me—classic case of crossed wires.
When I finally called my friend to sort out the situation, they didn’t give me clarity. Instead, they went off on me, screaming at and berating me. They said that I messed everything up and claimed that they were far too busy to communicate with me.
As they blamed me, I listened to them tell me everything I had “done wrong.” I wanted to defend myself because they had no reason to speak to me so harshly. This person has made mistakes, too, and I’ve never unloaded on them. But when they went for the jugular, I chose not to respond.
Some people might think that if I don’t respond, I give others the wrong impression.
But I’d rather have someone misread my silence than know that they have ammo to use against me. Silence can make a statement, but it’s also neutral and untouchable.
If I choose not to respond when someone fights with me, the worst they can say about me is that I didn’t fight back or that I stayed quiet. But if I snap, say exactly what’s on my mind, and curse them out, then they can hold my actions against me. Then, I hand over all of my power and potentially damage my character.
So yes, if you want to assume what I’m thinking or feeling because I’m quiet, go ahead. That’s on you. But I know who I am. I know my character better than anyone. If I choose silence, it’s not weakness. It’s me protecting my peace. It’s me practicing self-control. And honestly? It’s me refusing to let someone else drag me down to their level.
I’m naturally a quiet person, and I’ve noticed people mistake that for fear or helplessness. That could not be further from the truth. Just because I’m quiet does not mean I don’t have a voice. I do. You just don’t deserve to hear it right now.
I know what I think. I know what I feel. And when I choose to express it, I’ll do it with class.
My silence isn’t emptiness—it’s a decision. It’s self-control. Because the truth is, you don’t want to see me when I’m angry. You don’t want to see what happens when I’m not controlling myself. I’d rather let someone think I’m spineless than show up as two-faced or cruel.
Silence, for me, is power. It’s not about letting someone “win” the argument. It’s about me winning the bigger picture: my dignity, my composure, and my self-respect. Because at the end of the day, that’s what really matters.
And here’s the kicker: when you lose your cool, you tell on yourself. You reveal who you really are behind the mask you wear for everyone else. When you snap at me, when you come at me sideways, you’re showing me your real character. You’re showing me the side you work so hard to hide from other people. And guess what? It’s not nearly as pretty as you try to make it look.
So the next time you see me go silent, don’t mistake it for avoidance. Don’t mistake it for weakness. Understand that it’s self-control. It’s me protecting my peace, keeping my dignity, and refusing to give you ammunition.
Because at the end of the day, my silence says more about me than any words ever could. And it says more about you, too—because you’re the one who couldn’t keep your composure.
