5 Steps for Cleaning Makeup Brushes

Makeup brushes are essential tools for any beauty enthusiast. While they can help you achieve a flawless look, they may also cause skin problems if not cleaned regularly.

For example, dirty brushes are a hot spot for sebum, germs, and dead skin cells, contributing to skin breakouts and irritation. They can also cause more damage to the skin, especially if you have acne-prone skin. Moreover, they affect the quality of your makeup application. A brush with product buildup and dirt won’t give you flawless results.

You should generally wash your makeup brushes at home every seven to 10 days to protect your skin from bacteria that may cause flare-ups and irritation. Don’t know where or how to start? Read on to see the five steps to clean your makeup brushes.

1. Rinse the Tips

First, put clean, lukewarm water into a bowl. Then, rinse the tip of your brush. Be careful not to dip the whole brush head, as the glue that attaches the bristles to the handle may dissolve.

2. Clean Residue

Next, fill a new bowl with lukewarm water and a tablespoon of clarifying or gentle shampoo. Avoid using plain soap, as it can dry out the bristles. Again, only dip the brush head.

3. Swirl Each Brush

Swirl the brush in the bowl to ensure it’s clean. Gently massage each brush using your palms, and avoid pulling the bristles. You can also use a cleaning mat or glove — a textured tool that helps remove old makeup from the innermost fibers of the brush head.

4. Rinse Brushes

Rinse the brushes under running water. Use your fingers to remove the remaining soap and reside gently. Continue washing and rinsing brushes until all dirt and soap are gone.

5. Dry Brushes

Gently squeeze the bristles with a microfiber cloth to remove excess water. After that, place the brushes upside down in a brush stand to prevent water from running down the handle.

If you don’t have a brush stand, lay your brushes flat on a towel with brush heads hanging off the counter’s edge. Or, if you have sensitive or acne-prone skin, consider using a makeup sanitizer spray to minimize bacteria transfer to your face. This reduces the risk of getting breakouts and irritation.

Clean your makeup brushes regularly for you and your product’s health.

Washing your makeup brushes is a small yet important step in maintaining healthy skin. Follow these steps to get a more flawless application. Plus, you’ll see your makeup products’ true colors and textures, allowing you to create and experiment with new looks.
