5 Reasons The Sophomore Slump Is Completely Unavoidable

Finals week is almost upon us at universities across the nation, and as I’m finishing up my sophomore year and waiting for the start of the new semester, I realized how difficult it was to get through this year in one piece. Seniors are ready to graduate, freshman are ready to move up in the food chain, and juniors are ready to start their last year as students. Sophomores? We have absolutely nothing major to look forward to. Point blank.

Do you find yourself starting to not give a sh*t? I’m here to tell you that you’re not alone, and it’s completely normal. There’s this thing called the sophomore slump, and it’s as real as it gets.

Junior year is nothing special, so you have no reason to rush to it.

It’s simple…you just want to get out of there. You’re not looking forward to graduation like the seniors, and you’re not going to be any more respected in collegiate society than you are now. It’s okay to feel like you’re stuck, but you won’t be for long so try to use it as motivation to keep pushing through.

You feel like you’ve come so far, but you have so much left to go.

You’ve already been here for a full 2 years, but you still have another 2 left to go. It’s starting to feel endless, but I assure you that once you graduate, you’ll look back and realize this all passed you by in the blink of an eye.

You’ve had enough of the party scene, but still have to wait for the bar scene.

Odds are, you’re 20 and have a few more months left until 21. You can’t stand being at a crowded house party, stuck in a basement where you’re pressed up against people you barely know. And I can’t say I blame you. But remember, a few months from now you’ll be able to drink your stress away at the bar with all the big kids. Oh, and you’ll be broke. All the time. But that’s not the point.

As you’re beginning to figure out what you want to do, a lot of your friends are transferring.

It’s really hard to stay motivated when the people who keep you motivated are leaving. Everyone is starting to find their place, and sometimes their place is not where you are. Remember that you’re in college and people are going to come and go to find their best options. You can make your own decisions, but if you’re comfortable where you are, don’t let the decisions of others halt your motivation to keep going. They’ll be back to visit, and they’re not out of your life!

You’re so busy living in the moment that you sometimes forget why you’re here in the first place.

It’s easy to lose sight of the end goal. You’re in your second year, so you’re probably neck-deep in extracurriculars, getting involved, and living life on a schedule. When you’re so wrapped up in everything you signed up for, it’s easy to lose sight of why exactly you started this in the first place. Your priorities start to waver, and that’s completely normal. Just sit back, take a look at your schedule, and decide what you need to do to help yourself focus better.

If you’re finding yourself in a rut, just remember that it’s okay and completely normal. Take a deep breath, remember that you’re halfway there, and focus because it’s your job to make every moment count. You’ll regret it in the long run if you look back and remember that you wished away the years, so live each one like it’s the most important year ever!
