As a film major, I am always excited to see what’s on the horizon in cinema. 2026 is a big year for film. With that said, here are my most anticipated films for the year.
1. Dune: Messiah
Release Date: December 18, 2026
As a fan of the Dune books—and movies—I am incredibly excited for this film. If you know anything about the books, you know this movie is going to take a dark turn. I am curious to see whether the director decided to change the story or leave it as is. No matter what, the acting will be phenomenal, with the movie starring Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Florence Pugh, Robert Pattinson, and Jason Momoa.
2. Avengers: Doomsday
Release Date: December 18, 2026
While I’m not the biggest Marvel fan, I loved Infinity War and Endgame. I have high hopes that this movie will be as good as Marvel used to be. Marvel fans have told me that Doctor Doom is one of the strongest villains, with some even saying he’s stronger than Thanos. If that remains true, we can look forward to some incredible fight scenes.
3. Spider-Man: Brand New Day
Release Date: July 31, 2026
Another Marvel pick has made my list. The cliffhanger in No Way Home made this one of my most anticipated films. Compared with any other superhero film, I don’t think this is going to be anything special. However, I am a sucker for depressed, vigilante superheroes, so I think it’s going to be an entertaining watch.
4. Project Hail Mary
Release Date: March 20, 2026
As a reader, I am extremely excited for this movie. The book is phenomenal. We follow Ryland Grace, an amnesiac science teacher who wakes up on a spaceship millions of miles from Earth. He has to figure out how to save the world from an alien species threatening humanity’s survival.
5. Wuthering Heights
Release Date: February 13, 2026
This film will either be perfect or immensely disappointing. Older novels are hard to adapt because they rely on internal monologues rather than dialogue and have a slower pace. Modern films are often fast-paced and dialogue-heavy. Nevertheless, the film stars Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi, so the acting will be incredible. If you don’t know the book, the story follows Heathcliff, an orphan who falls in love with Catherine Earnshaw, the daughter of a wealthy family. The two are forced apart when Catherine marries Edgar Liton, a man of her social class. Heathcliff is determined to get her back.
6. Odyssey
Release Date: July 17, 2026
If there is one movie my entire film school is excited for, it’s this one. Christopher Nolan, the director of The Dark Knight, Interstellar, Oppenheimer, and Inception, directed this movie. Therefore, it is almost guaranteed to be incredible. The plot follows Odysseus as he voyages back to Ithaca after the Trojan War. Along the way, he faces several challenges, including fighting a Cyclops.
7. Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping
Release date: November 20, 2026
Unless you are a Hunger Games fan, you probably will not be excited for this movie. However, I definitely am. This movie will follow Haymitch as he competes in the 50th Hunger Games. Since it’s a quarter quell, there are twice as many tributes, with two girls and two boys from each district. Like the other movies, it is based on the book, which came out in 2025.
8. Supergirl
Release date: June 26, 2026
This is a big year for superhero fans. Marvel has two coming out, as previously mentioned, and D.C. has this one. I’ll be honest, I’m mostly excited for this film because it stars Milly Alcock, who played young Rhaenyra Targaryen in House of the Dragon. She is a fantastic actress. In this movie, she plays the lead, Kara Zor-El. The film covers Supergirl’s backstory and her path of revenge.
9. Disclosure Day
Release date: June 12, 2026
This movie, starring Emily Blunt and Colin Firth, is about humanity’s first contact with aliens. The main reason I’m anticipating this film’s release is that Steven Spielberg is directing it. If you think you don’t know Spielberg, you’re wrong. He directed all the Indiana Jones movies, Jurassic Park, Jaws, West Side Story, Ready Player One, and so many more incredible films. I have little doubt that this film will be just as amazing as all his others.
10. Michael
Release date: April 24, 2026
Are you obsessed with biopics like me? Well, you are going to love this upcoming biopic about Michael Jackson. Jafaar Jackson, Michael’s nephew, plays the lead, ensuring the Jackson family’s involvement in the making of the film. Hence, we know the film will be pretty accurate to the truth.
Most of these films are coming out later in the year, so in the meantime, check your local theater. There are already so many amazing films out. Iron Lung, a horror movie about apocalypse survivors who have to explore an ocean of blood in a submarine, is out right now. Avatar: From Blood and Ash is out if you are a fan of the franchise. Zootopia 2 is still in theaters, and fans are raving. From what I’ve heard, people are loving Hamnet, a historical fiction film about Shakespeare and his family. If you would rather not watch anything new, The Lord of the Rings is playing in theaters nationwide, celebrating its 25th anniversary. With that said, what are you waiting for? Get to the movie theater.
