A Poem: Behind The Run Downs Of An Old Town

As I live through life, I have noticed that events tend to happen in a cycle. There are periods of high economic returns, followed by periods of low returns.

Even through my courses, I have learned that sometimes we change as people and return to the habits we had as little kids. I have noticed this throughout my life as well. For example, many of my passions stem from my childhood interests, such as cross-country running and hiking.

This poem compares the process of tearing down buildings to the cyclical nature of events.

On the grassland years ago
Boots and concrete stomped below

Men and women scurried by
Some are just trying to arrive by nine

‘Tis the new age, a new beginning
A whole new place, with dreams awaiting

The boots hurried fast with sounds,
While machines rattle and pound

The wind and storms were never a threat,
These buildings grew after all these years

One a restaurant, then a casino
Then a playhouse, parked with limos

Actresses and directors were always there
Whenever they could’ve been anywhere

Pictures and autographs filled the walls
Especially during every fall.

But forty years later,
A man sees the acre.

All full of grass
Nothing of the past

Other than economic events, I realized the poem also has a nostalgic aspect. Perhaps we had a place we loved as children that later closed. That was probably Blockbuster or the local HMV. However, ever since those stores closed, I realized that society nowadays is not the same as it was in the past.

Therefore, the poem itself covers multiple topics related to life. However, a remaining theme is the differences in timing across places.

No matter how we grow up, we still have memories that remain in the past. And no matter whether places are closed or taken away from us, they will always have an impact.
