Why All Colleges Should Have Mental Health Days

I didn’t go to college, but I know plenty of people who did. I can assure you that none of them took mental health days off like they should have. College can be stressful, with all the papers, exams, and concerns about student debt. It places a lot of pressure on college students. 

For all these reasons, colleges should make mental health days mandatory not just for students on campus, but also for staff and everyone else; this sets a positive tone for the school.

I believe that implementing days focused on mental well-being would demonstrate that schools across the country value not only academic performance but also the mental health of their students. I think students would appreciate this initiative if schools adopted it.

If mental health days were normalized for college students, it would make their experience easier and help alleviate some stress. 

It would allow them to take some much-needed me time off when they need it, without feeling guilty that they’re missing class projects or homework, etc. 

I would even say that this practice should start even before college, in high school, middle school, or even earlier, because everyone needs mental health days, regardless of their grade level.

Mental health days are important for everyone. Imagine how much less stressed kids would be if they had the freedom to take a break when needed, rather than feeling pressured to cram during a study session or finish a last-minute paper due the next morning. 

Schools should view mental health days as an investment in the mental well-being of their students.

By doing this, we benefit not only our generation but also future generations. It demonstrates to them that they matter as individuals, not just through their test scores or athletic achievements.

By neglecting this issue, campuses may cause more harm than good. This can lead to both physical and emotional burnout, potentially resulting in students dropping out due to overwhelming pressure.

The members of our school systems at all levels need to remember their own experiences at those ages and multiply that understanding by a thousand for kids today, who face challenges such as social media and various other pressures. 

If mental health days were implemented nationwide, students everywhere would have a completely different perspective on going to school. This change would stem from schools recognizing the importance of mental health days and their positive impact on students. Our school systems significantly influence students’ lives, and prioritizing mental well-being can lead to a healthier and more supportive educational environment.
