After Everything, This Is How I Want You To Remember Me

I want you to remember me and smile.

I want you to remember my words. My stories that soothe you to sleep when you felt sick, and the hours we spend on the phone every night. I want you to remember our jokes, our laughter and the way we could never stop talking. I want you to remember me and feel like it wasn’t just another predictable chapter with a sad ending. But rather, a glimpse of happiness. I want you to remember the goofy times we had together, and all of our quirky habits that we wished we could change.

I want you to remember all those times I broke the rules for you, and for how I followed my heart, and not my head. I want you to remember me as the person that showed you that lost love is never completely lost. That we sometimes meet people at the wrong times, and they must go. I want you to remember me as the one who taught you that some people will always hold a special place in our hearts because we want to keep them there, rather than forget them.

You are that person for me.

I want you to remember me and smile. I want you to remember me when you are doubting yourself, when you are unsure if you can achieve something. I want you to remember how I believed in you and the potential I saw in you. I want you to remember that your ambition was the initial trait I instantly loved, but that there were so many traits to follow that held me glued to your heart with no escape.

I want you to remember that I believed you were strong and determined and I never questioned your ability. I want you to remember that it’s perfectly okay not to feel okay, and being weak is strength in itself. I want you to remember that there’s nothing to be afraid of but fear itself, and that sometimes, you just need to take that leap of faith for your dreams. I want you to remember the braveness, kindness and thoughtfulness that you taught me. The times you’ve played it cool, and the times you didn’t, because you’re only human.

We all are.

I want you to remember that time is a gift, and realize there are merely seven days in every week, and someday is not one of them. Remember that there’s nothing wrong with living for today, this moment, right here and now. Remember that being able to love someone so wholly is a gift, and that not all gifts need to be returned. Sometimes there is beauty in simply giving and that you are always loved when you are kind.

Remember to fall in love with someone who chooses you just as confidently as you chose them. Commit to the person who lifts you up when things get rough, the person who fights to make things work when the reality of life gets just a little overwhelming and discouraging. Remember to fall in love with someone who sees the wars within you and not only chooses to stay, but chooses to stand by your side and help you fight them. Remember to fall in love.

I want you to remember to strive to find someone who cradles your dark, and is not afraid to embrace your light. Someone who brings out the best in you, and not the stress in you. Someone who will want to be with you even when you’re not at your best. I want you to to remember me and realize that you should fall in love with someone who does not make you feel like you are hard to love. Someone that challenges you every day.

This is how I want you to remember me, because that’s how I’ll always remember you.
