We’ve all heard the classic success story: Someone says they continuously try and fail. Then, they become very successful. We call this the comeback story, which states that an individual will have to continuously try, regardless of what life throws at them.
We’ve seen so many examples of comebacks. Think of your favorite artist who decided to take a break from producing music. Some time passed, and then they released a new single. As we all can predict, the new song becomes a hit. We hear it on the radio over and over again. There are also athletes, academics, managers, and teachers who seemingly have dragged themselves out of their own difficult situations.
Comebacks are known to be challenging.
Working towards success often means staying resilient. Resilience, the ability to bounce back from setbacks, is a key factor in making a successful comeback. Some say success means knowing what matters, regardless of the challenges. This is just a fancy way of reminding others to never forget their goals.
However, as human beings living in complex economies and societies, we know that our goals tend to deviate depending on the conditions around us. Consider the pandemic, which had plenty of economic and societal effects. Some of us had to change our careers, while others could no longer see the promotion they once aimed for. Yet, we adapted to these conditions, constantly asking ourselves, “What is our next step?”
Afterward, people realize how difficult it is to set goals and stick to them. For whatever reason, many of us then seem to traverse our path — the path we initially didn’t want to take and didn’t expect. Our original goal, which we planned to achieve, is now impossible, as we no longer work towards it.
We then become lost, unsure of what life will throw at us.
Unsure of how we will tackle difficulties and who we actually are, including our values and beliefs.
However, once we determine our own values, we will notice that life offers us many more opportunities. Doors soon begin to open, and we start to participate in a few small activities and events. When we try out new things, we gain a deeper understanding of what we truly stand for, empowering us to make more informed decisions.
Then, we begin to work hard toward our values. Some people pursue activities, attend events, and perhaps propose new work projects. With all that, the world seemingly takes a 180-degree turn: New people enter our lives, and we receive accolades we never thought we would receive.
Throughout the process, we realize we made our own comeback before we knew it.
