The Top 15 Underrated Songs Of 2023

2023 was a huge year for music (especially if you’re a Taylor Swift fan). But plenty of songs flew under the radar that could use more love.

So, to continue the tradition, I will champion some bops, bangers, and ballads you might have missed this year. Once you’re done listening to your Spotify Wrapped playlist, here are 15 songs to close out the year with.

1. “Drunk On a Flight” by Eloise

The jazzy vibes in this song are immaculate. The wordplay in Eloise’s lyrics is also next-level. I can’t wait to check out more from her in 2024!

2. “175 Lbs” by Wé Ani

This is an anthem for anyone who went through a breakup in 2023. Wé has such a deep and rich tone to her voice, which is exemplified perfectly in this song.

3. “Little Blue” by Jacob Collier, ft. Brandi Carlile

This is the perfect song to listen to before bed and experience a calm, dream-like feeling. I’m not going to lie: Jacob’s music often goes over my head because of its complexity. But this hits the perfect sweet spot between complicated and simple.

4. “As Good As It Gets” by FIZZ

FIZZ is a new indie group that sounds both current and nostalgic. Though artists I love like dodie and Orla Gartland are in this band, this track, fronted by Greta Isaac, was this album’s standout. This is a great song to scream along to if you’re really in your feelings.

5. “Look My Age” by Brooke Alexx

Everyone needs a reminder that aging is a gift. And this is the perfect upbeat song to carry that message.

6. “The Answer Is Yes” by The Swell Season

Oscar-winning duo The Swell Season had a comeback single and reunion tour this year, and not nearly enough people are talking about it! This song is a sweet retrospective of Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová’s friendship.

7. “Whatchu Want” by Citizen Queen

I need Citizen Queen to be the next big girl group. I’m begging. They released their debut EP this year, filled with 90s- and 2000s-inspired bops like this one.

8. “Tiny Things” by Tiny Habits

Tiny Habits brings the ultimate cozy vibes. Their harmonies are to die for, and the acoustic atmosphere complements them perfectly.

9. “I Don’t Like Me Either” by Shaaba

Shaaba’s a vlogger who recently stepped into the music world, but she did so with a lot of care and heart. The fun synthy instrumentation and her soft vocals make a winning combo.

10. “Love Actually” by Keane

Yes, “Love Actually,” as in the movie. Keane wrote this song for the movie before they released their debut album. But the director ended up not using it, which he soon regretted after Keane’s first album “Hopes and Fears” skyrocketed into popularity.

They finally released an official version of the song just in time for Christmas this year. So enjoy it with a warm beverage while watching the movie.

11. “Yeti” by Paris Paloma, ft. Old Sea Brigade

Paris Paloma is a folksy queen. Her song “Labour” blew up this year (for good reason), but “Yeti” is another huge win for her. The lyrics, instrumentation, and vocals are hauntingly beautiful. I can’t wait for her to release a full-length album.

12. “In a Way” by Libianca

After I recommended Libianca’s song “People” in my 2022 underrated songs roundup, it went insanely viral, so call me a psychic! Libianca just released her EP “Walk Away” this month, so give it some love. This R&B, afro, and gospel fusion track is one of my favorites from it.

13. “Breakdown” by Tessa Violet

A mental breakdown song has never been so fun to dance along to.

14. “Nothing You Can Take From Me” from Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes

The new Hunger Games movie was incredible, and the Appalachian folk music-inspired soundtrack sung by the super-talented Rachel Zegler was one of its highlights. If you like country, folk, or gospel music, this soundtrack is a must-listen!

15. “Killed My Clone” by Madisyn

I loved the concept of this song, using killing a clone to talk about finding your individuality and chasing your dreams. The whistle notes are also ON POINT.
